My hens have just started to lay although I'm collecting eggs from the nest box I keep finding a smashed egg on coop floor.it can't have fallen out of a nest box as they are well away from them they seem to be under the perches is this normal for hens to do this when they start to lay

yeh its pretty normal if they are just starting to lay in time they will find the nest boxes an use them but really they will just go where they feel comfy and safe .what i cant stand is when one of mine has laided a soft shelled egg during the night and the other girls only seem to notice it when i let them out then its a scramlbe who gets to it first me or them  i normally lose out as i have to get the door undone .

As Karminski says it is normal and can also happen if they get frightened at night or squabble on the perch in the morning. Only danger is that it can start a habbit of egg eating. They will normally eat any broken or soft shelled egg but occasionally they make the connection to an egg laid in the nest box starting first with a whole egg laid on the floor. Important to get to the eggs on the floor first, broken or whole, if you can and remove them.
