Layers Pellets

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on diet?
My chickens seem to dislike layers pellets (and layers mash) and refuse to eat it.... I do give them other things (veges etc) but not until the afternoon and then corn just before they roost - the idea being that they are supposed to eat their layers pellets in the morning first - but they won't! Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do?

I think they get fussy in the winter , wanting and maybe needing more corn etc. Mine have done the same , I changed brands and now they are gobbling it up - I rather suspect theyve changed what was in my usual brand as well as the hens being fussy! Ros

Mine went off their organic pellets and mash,I bought a cheaper brand that isn't organic(Countrywide Stores Own brand)and mine are scoffing pellets and mash again.
If you know someone else who keeps chooks, see if they will have the pellets you've got,and buy a small bag of a different brand of pellets. If that doesn't work,I'm not sure what to suggest, but,I would believe your chooks.I doubt that they are being fussy, for some reason this food doesn't suit them.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

Thanks for the advice. Off to buy a different brand!! Will let you know how it goes. :D

Good luck,I realise it's a different species, but years ago when I kept more rabbits I'd buy their food in 20kg sacks from a reputable source.
When opening a new sack, one of my rab's wouldn't eat it,she'd rather starve.I was hand feeding her on jars of baby food for 3 weeks. When I called into the suppliers that I'd got it from, she'd had some of her rabbits also refuse it,she asked me to bring it back which I did.She returned the food to the factory that she got it from, she got a reply to say it was contaminated, and,a full refund. After this incident,I tend to believe the animals, they know what they need.
I realise this was isolated incident,I'm sure your pellets are fine, but there is obviously something about them that is putting your chooks off eating it.

I have given them a different brand of organic layers pellets and they still won't eat it! They look really hungry but I am reluctant to give them their treats this early as that might just make them continue to turn down the layers pellets... On the other hand I don't want them to waste away... Does anyone have any ideas? They absolutely gobble down corn,, veges, fruit, rice etc. so there is nothing wrong with their appetites. Are they just fussy? Is it very bad for them not to eat LP?

When I was a child (more years ago than I will admit to here!) our chickens were kept nearly entirely on scraps and forage , they just got corn in the afternoon to get them in and a supply of grit and water . They thrived on it , plenty of eggs and long lived chickens , even had any meat bones to chomp on. I am sure there wernt even all these fancy feeds around then. It maybe you have to try yet another brand - mine wont eat the locally available 'organic' or expensive ones! The one they will eat at the mo. comes in a yellow sac ( cant remember brand , will look when I go out again ) but can only get in one of the 4 local corn merchants. Ros

mine also wouldn't eat the expensive organic ffod I bought Gretl, yet,a really chap brand that is half the price they gobble up.Ros is quite right, years ago ppl didn't buy 'fancy' food for their chooks.Kitchen scraps were the mainstay of their diet, people also would keep a pot boiling which veggies were cooked in for their hens.

OK, I'm going to try some cheaper ones.. The cheapest I can find online are a brand called Farmgate LP at around £6 for 20KG. It says that it is a complete food and you don't need to feed grit when feeding this. Has anyone tried this and is this true? Has anyone found these to be any good?

I just posted for you Gretyl and I lost it! The yellow sack one mine will eat is called Home Farm feeds. Have you tried cooking up all their favorites, e g. rice , pots etc , when drained add a small amount of veg oil to make it adherent, mix in crumbled dried meal worms then stir in a little of the mash/pellets-they wont bother picking pellets off their favorite food.
