Do they have a vet or animal welfare officer of some kind at poultry auctions? I went to the Kent one yesterday and was a bit shocked at the condition of some of the lots. One sussex with obvious difficulty breathing , lying down with a clear discharge coming from its nostrils. Other hens had droppings in the pen that would be causing me concern if they were coming from my hens. Less than 50% of lots had any water provided, not to mention the boxes of small chicks that did not look old enough to be off heat, which I know has been raised as an issue by Practical Poultry Magazine.
