Kent poultry Auction 31/07/10

Do they have a vet or animal welfare officer of some kind at poultry auctions? I went to the Kent one yesterday and was a bit shocked at the condition of some of the lots. One sussex with obvious difficulty breathing , lying down with a clear discharge coming from its nostrils. Other hens had droppings in the pen that would be causing me concern if they were coming from my hens. Less than 50% of lots had any water provided,not to mention the boxes of small chicks that did not look old enough to be off heat, which I know has been raised as an issue by Practical Poultry Magazine.

Hello and welcome I have moved your post to this forum- some auctions/sales have RSPCA officers present- most dont unfortunately
It's always a risk buying at auction.

Hi & welcome

Seems to be a common thing, though if you see any poorly birds report them to the office & hopefully they will be removed. A friend of mine complained at our local auction & birds were removed. Ive sold a few at mart & always provide water/food. It really amazes me that more people dont. Our local one is making an effort to ensure birds have shavings etc
