As a school we want to keep chickens. Before we start we could really use some advice on preparing the area for the birds and the best sort of fencing to install. Can anyone help?

Hi Ray,
welcome to the best poultry forum. You will get some excellent advise on here,Tim helps a school local to him with their hens.Maybe re-post your post in the general chickens forum,I'm afraid I cant do that.
Also, how many hens were you hoping to keep and which breed or hybrid?

Hi Ray,

Welcome to the Forum.

I have moved the post so you get more views and more help :)

Fire away, with your questions. I do help my local school with hatching / incubation and they keep a few hens too in the school garden and haven't come across any major hurdles.

You will find some help on the poultrykeeper.com site, perhaps the Keeping Chickens area where there is an Absolute Beginners Guide to keeping chickens as well as an FAQ section would be a good place to start.

There is also an article on keeping chickens at school you might enjoy.

We are always keen to help new chicken keepers, especially schools.

Tim

Hi Ray,

Just for your info, this may be if interest.

My Sister-in-law looks after her kids school's chickens. They have about 12 Silkies (with a couple of others that they have 'taken in' ) chosen for their temperament. It is a small rural village school backing onto fields & countryside. They have made a 6/7ft high wire netting enclosure in a suitable corner of the grounds & are lucky having a lot of willing parents to help with these things! Also being a small rural community they have knowledgeable locals on hand who can give advice (& deal when necessary) with a variety of issues as they arise (foxes, rats, etc)

They raised the money to buy the chicken coup in various ways as schools do!

As she lives literally opposite the school door, so school holidays aren't a problem.

Another lady I know gives her village school 20 fertilised eggs each summer term & the project is to hatch them & raise them till the end of term then she has them back.

Best of luck,You'll be hooked yourself never mind the kids
