Ivermectin

Hello all

hope the spelling is correct, what is Ivermectin ?.
I treated my girls with frontline spray from the vet ealier in the year for lice, it worked a treat and the girls were bad, I dont know how I missed it but they were soon sorted out.

Is there something to treat the girls for lice, mites, worms as a precaution, 2 or 3 times a year ?,as these things take alot of sorting out once they get a hold.

Frontline is very good but I realise it is not licensed for chickens and would not like to use it except in dire cases

Ivermectin is a widely used antiparasitic agent both internal and external for many animals (and humans)both pet and livestock. It is licensed for aviary and cage birds and vets will prescribe for poultry.
If you are looking at a purely preventative method, good old Diatom powder in the nest boxes should keep lice away. An effective wormer is flubenvet given twice a year Spring and Autumn.
You can buy flubenvet readily either 1% packs for a few backyard hens, or the larger 2.5% packs for flocks. Marriages provide an easy way of adminstering by supplying ready mixed flubenvet to a feed range they have.

thanks again for your prompt reply, this site is great for advice and help.

I think that I am on the right track, I use the diatom powder but was afraid of using too much and did wonder if it was the diatom on the perches that was making the undercarriage of my girls red and sore so I stoped using on the perch, I have restarted using because of the redmite.

I think that I need to be more generous with my application.

I have also used flubenvet for worming,would it be ok to use now whilst they are moulting or is it too much of a shock to their system ?
