Ive never seen this before-maybe its common and Ive always missed it. One of my speckled sussex laid her first egg today-thats not unusual! She spent several hours in her box doing so , what I found extraordinary was that the young cockerel went in to the box , sat down and stayed with her the whole time till she reappeared having laid it and then jumped out with her! :) Ros.

Bless him!! Never heard of that before - perhaps he was cold and wanted to snuggle up to her

I've got a young cockerel who's a good lad. Always lets the girls know when he's found something good. He also thinks they don't know how to lay an egg, so sits in the nest box making I'm going to lay an egg noises then comes out later making I've laid an egg noises and generally interested and encouraging them to lay. I find good cockerels take an interest and fuss around, particularly when their favourites are in laying. I've also heard occasionally some eg. pekins can actually take a turn siting.

bless him,he was keeping an eye on her and encouraging her, what a lovely cockerel.

Hi Ros
No it isn't unusual - my gold silkie cockerel sits in the house whilst his wives lay, and an Orpington cockerel does the same. Think it is sweet, shows there is a great bond between them.

Well- Ive never had it before , I was amazed. Maybe its the way you bring up your eggs- with manners-hes the boy from a VP egg! I am waiting for her next egg now to see if he keeps doing this. Ros
