Looking for info on incubating duck eggs in lancashire with dry-bulb thermometer :?:

Hi David, Im using a novital 20 incubator with a dry-bulb thermometer but a
lot of the info on the net is for wet-bulb thermometer, just need some info
on temp and humidity

Hi, you need a temp of 37.5 C and a humidity of roughly 40-50% for the first 25 days- then up humidity to 65-75% for last three days and stop turning- all ducks , except muskovies take 28 days- muskovies take 35 so if it is muskovy eggs stop turning and up humidity at 32 days- most hatches fail because of too much humidity during the first weeks of incubation- follow your instructions for your incubator for adding water etc- any questions please ask, regards, David :)

The little white dials that come free with some incubators are rubbish by the way - I put 5 into an incubator once and they read between 30 and 70% between them...

You'd do well making or buying a wet bulb, they are far more accurate...

Tim

Thanks david, tim, decided to buy a brinsea wet bulb thermometer £21 for accuracy

Thanks

Got the temp at 37.5 & humidity at 45% just candled today at day 6 all
12 fertile and going good :D :D :D do i spray the eggs with water??

Just one more question Tim, when i candled today day 6 the veins are only
on one side of the egg is this normal

Yes, it depends on where the embryo is sitting as to what you see- sometimes if it's close to the edge of the shell, a little later on you can see the heart beating. There are probably veins but they are 'deeper' inside the egg and you just can't see them now. You can see the most with the lights turned out in the room and in a few more days there will be even more to see..

It's very exciting!

It is exciting tim, is it normal to see the egg twitch a bit at day 20

I think 2 dident use the yolk :?: is this bad

Wow, looks like you did well.

Yes, there's all sorts of gunk in a ducklings shell - normally, the yolk is absorbed but if you get an early hatch, there can be a little left over and a weak duckling. None of your ducklings look weak though!

What breed are they? There appears to be one in the middle that's different to the others>?

Bought from ebay as silver appleyards, have you add any expreance with this breed

Hello, the "yolk " you see is just the waste products from them during incubation- nothing to worry about :)
They look like Appleyards apart from the one Tim mentioned- be interesting to see how it turns out! Are they large or "bantam" ? Hope they are all eating and drinking well by now ( and making plenty of mess  ) Are you using duck or goose crumb? as chick crumb is no good for them- you need to use unmedicated crumb- good luck and keep us posted as to how they go :)
regards, David :)
