Hi there

I am incubating runner ducks, forgive me for posting here but there is no incubation section in the duck area.

Our eggs are at day 20 today. When I turned this morning it was all going well, but I made a stupid mistake this morning and unplugged the incubator by accident. It was off for 5 or 6 hours when I went to do the next turn and the internal temp was reading 22c :(. I have put it back on and it's back up to heat now.

What are the chances of any ducklings surviving?

Chances of them surviving are very good by all the reports I have read Kizma, but they may now hatch a day late. Good luck.

Thank you, that is a relief. I've been feeling so bad about it. I had read mixed stories for similar situations. I will just hang on now and see what happens....fingers crossed.

At least it was during the day, and temperatures are quite high at the moment, so probably not such a problem as it might have been. Good luck, please keep us posted!

Just a follow up question, if they are likely to hatch a day later, should I continue to turn the eggs for an extra day or stick to day 25 lock down?

Stick to the 25 day lockdown Kizma. It isn't necessary to turn the eggs any longer than 21 days anyway as I read recently, basing it on chicken eggs that don't need turning after day 14 and are locked down at day 18.

Quick update. Today is day 26 and we can hear tapping from the incubator. I have already locked down and increased the humidity. I'd also read in a few places to reduce the temperature but I am struggling to do that. Will that cause any problems? It's sitting at 101 f in a still air incubator.

My reference says reduce the temperature by 0.5C and this is to counter heat generated by moving around ready to hatch. You may be struggling because they are already generating extra heat Kizma, but I have no experience of still air machines so am just guessing. Hope all goes well.

That makes sense since I can already hear them tapping away like crazy. I'm happy with the settings now, I have a very stable humidity and the temperature has settled a little lower. Lets see what happens in the morning!

Just an update...
today 8 of 9 ducks hatched successfully. Number 9 died in the shell :(
One of the ducklings has curled feet. I've read about making 'shoes' to flatten them out with cardboard and sticky tape. Does anyone have experience of this?

Thank you marigold. We have successfully made shoes and the feet are sitting flat on them. However it also has splayed legs, but not like any example I have seen online that can be pulled together with hobbles. It keeps going into a splits position and I tried a hobble but it's legs just keep crossing over and it lies with its feet out behind it. I'm worried that I'm not going to be able to correct this if the hobbles don't hold the legs in the right place.

i have a janoel 24 auto incubator it's temp is preset at 38 c there is a vent hole on top is that left open or shut whist incubating it only says turn cross ventilation hole to max 18 days later thanks for any advice phil

Hi I'm on day 17 of turning my chicken eggs, do I turn them on day 18 or stop turning them now .
