Hi Im new to hatching eggs!!!!
im on day 10 and im unsure if my eggs are fertile.
after candling them The only may i can describe it is if you are looking at the egg and the air pocket is at the bottom as you are looking up on one side the there is a dark shadow that doesnt move at all.
I can't see any veins at all should i be doing???
hope someone can help
Thanks

There should be veins present at 10 days. I'd just leave them in case you're not doing it right.

hi thanks for the reply.
I have looked at images on the internet and some look like mine and some dont. Someone told me that duck eggs dont develop veins until day 14 have you heard this?

Hi,
I've just hatched some runner ducks in the last couple of days(see my post on shrink wrapped duckling).
I candled at 7 days and found 5 fertile and one infertile. There were veins in my eggs at this stage.
This was my first time at hatching. Good luck!

Duck eggs (due to being light shells) should be easier to candle. You should see veins by 7 or 8 days. The dark shadow is probably the yolk. If you rotate the egg there should be a dark dot that is usually visible in the centre - this is the embryo developping.

I'd say they are infertile. :-(

Sometimes this happens, I had some eggs in the incubator and during candling it appears as you describe. These *dark spots* turned into four cute chicks. :D
