HI,

I would like to get some cream legbar young girls that are just old enough to be off a heat lamp so I can handle them for the children.

What sort of price should I be looking at as I don't want to pay more than I should.

Thanks so much,

Greenhen

Well, in my area they sell between £8 - £12 upwards, it all depends how many weeks old they are, etc. It differs from county to county.

thanks so much for your hepl,

Any more info from others on the forum would be greatfull to.

Thanks again

Greenhen

I paid £40 for my legbar, but she was just in lay. She's a stunning looking bird though!

i sell mine off heat at £20 and never have problems selling them. the only problem i get is constant calls after they have sold from other people enquiring about them! as they are such lovely birds and lay blue eggs they are very popular and in my area very hard to get your hands on. i have another batch due soon.

How much you pay will depend very much on the bird and its origins.
There are plenty of so called Cream Legbars about but unfortunately very few that are the real McCoy.
I have a friend who breeds these and wins with them and she has pounded it into my brain that the clue to the bird is in the name 'Cream', so many are wrongly gold and she goes into a hissy fit about them
Buy the real thing from a good breeder and you will pay the relevant dollar for them.

 sorry, that friend would be me then  I do go off on one sometimes about Cream Legbars, I jsut get fed up with the amount of bad ones out there!!
ccm is right though, get decent ones, the right colour (not gold in their neck hackles or colourful boys) and you'll go far :-)17

i paid £7.50 lats March for my 5-week-old cream legbar and she's turned out lovely, and a good layer of blue eggs. At least with legbars you can get them at that age without being bothered that they may turn out to be cockerels.

Hi,I paid £4 for a week old chick in July so that gives you an idea of what one a few weeks older may have been. She was bought from a breeder in Durham.

that's interesting what you paid as I charge £15 for 6wk olds then £2 per week after that. You just need to be careful that they are what they are sold as, there are far too many that are the wrong colour...
Your right re the autosexing, it's very handy ;)

We bought 3 baby chicks for £9. Two died at 8 months shortly after laying their first eggs. One was Lyphoid Lucosis and the other a heart attack. The survivor (Molly) lays well, lovely blue eggs, but she is very small. They were all the right colour but obviously there is some major weakness in the line. We have Lucy from somewhere else who is the right size and colour but lays green eggs. We went to look at more but they all laid green eggs. We saw some at auction, lovely big strong birds but they had white flashes not blue so presume they will lay white eggs. Point I am making is you have to be very careful what you buy as there are loads of people selling sub-standard stock and the price is really immaterial, it's the quality you should be looking for.
