Hallo all you wonderful chicken experts, as you know I am new at this (and having my fair share of drama) now I think my little goldtop has gone broody. She seems glued to the nesting box and quite grumpy when I persuaded her out with worms. What on earth do I do? I have no cock so there is no chance of any fertile eggs and she has only been with me about a month! Help please.

Oh Fiona a goldtop you are in for fun they are about the broodiest hens you can get.Mine is the broody from hell she hatchs chicks and two weeks after leaving them off she goes again. Mine is also the most vicous protective mother ever so get your gloves out.
You just need to try and break her. Dont let her sit on eggs take them off her and take her off the nest box. I have a dog cage which I put her in so that the others can get in to lay but she cant get into sit. Leave her in there all day with food and water. I have heard you can dunk their bum in cold water to discourage them but never resorted to this myself. Sure someone else will have other suggestions. I am sure you will find this subject covered in lots of posts.

I got goldtops because they spend the best part of their lives broody - most people get them because of their broody qualities. It won't be easy to get her off her nest, but male her uncomfortable - put her in something like a dog cage, where air circulates to cool her down, or change her henhouse - moving birds can stop them being broody - the water on the bum will only work as long as she is wet - you need something a bit more long term

I agree with dorinda, try moving her to a dog cage, I once had a hen who was broody and i moved her so that she would not sit on all the freshly laid eggs, but instead discouaged her from being broody! Though with your hen being a goldtop, it may be a bit harder to discourage her...
I know you havet got a cockerel, but do you want chicks? If you do, you can always get some hatching eggs...

I think the breeder must have seen me coming. I went to get two normal, large egg producing chickens and came away with two goldtops and a maran who has a tumour and is dying!!! I specifically asked him if they went broody as to be honest all I want is some fun and some eggs. He assured me it rarely happened!!! I don't think I could get some eggs for her to hatch as they are in a run and then have an electric fence around them owing to the fox! (who has already taken three) so all I can imagine is little fluff balls making and escape through the fence. Thanks for all the advice, she sure gets cross when I remove the eggs (growls like a dog). I don't have a dog cage (and the amount I have already spent on them I think it would kill my husband if I suggested getting a dog cage. Perhaps I can find a way with something else! Thanks for the advice everyone.. No more goldtops for me (although she is very very pretty and funny). :D

I think he did see you coming. Dont feel bad a similar thing happened to me when I got my first hens. On a positive note goldtops are really sweet hens and I love mine to bits but not too good if all you want is eggs. Dont think hatching eggs is a good idea unless you are prepared to cull the males. Just keep taking her out of the nest box and take away the eggs as soon as she lays them it will work eventually, On the dog cage idea mine is indespensable but I had it given, I never used it for my dog but hens well its never out of use. You could always look at car boot sales etc cause they are expensive new.

To get her off broody, take the advice given. It's good you've decided not to go for hatching chicks as it can bring all kinds of problems. Other keepers should not give out advice so readily to rear chicks i.m.o.

Shame you've been sold what you didn't want but hope you get some enjoyment and some eggs.

My hen has been broody now for so long I've forgotten when it started!! I wait for all the others to lay and then shut the door and shut her out. I'm also having to hand feed her tasty morsels to make sure she at least has some food in her crop, as she wasn't eating enough. This particular hen has been a problem from day one, so don't worry, you're not the only one with 'problem' hens!!!
