I've just come across this blog post on Poultrykeeper by Zoe Brodie-James (dorsetduckowner and moderator on here) about the horrors involved in most of the production of down for duvets and for the coats and gilets which are so fashionable nowadays. Do have a read -I bought a winter coat last year, I'm so glad I chose Primaloft!

Interesting. I had always thought it was a by product of the meat industry too.

I switched to wool duvet and pillow about 5 years ago although admittedly I have two sofas which have feather filled cushions (bought in about 1997 I think).

Fortunately for the ducks I'd look like the Michelin man in any kind of puffy jacket so there's no chance I'll buy one!

Yep. I also saw a horrific article recently about the production of Angora (from rabbits), where the rabbit fur is "harvested" in much the same way, from live rabbits. What on earth is wrong with people?

Birds used for the meat industry are plucked by machine, and the feathers would be damaged, so they can't be used for anything. Besides, I suppose the thinking is that if you kill the bird, you only get one "harvest" of feathers from it! :(

Truly gross.
Earth, where every prospect pleases and only man is vile !
