Hi new here, pics of my hybrids and bantam questions

Hi! I'm new here. I've stumbled across this forum before so thought I'd register! :-)08

About me: my parents kept 23 free range chickens a few years ago but they are no longer due to old age and Mr Fox. I got my three chickens in January - great layers who live in an Eglu Go with run and extension.

My questions: I am interested in getting bantams but know next to nothing about them. Could anyone tell me, please...
a) What are good bantams for looks, temperament and egg laying?
b) Are most bantams available by hatching eggs only?
c) What to do with hatched males?
d) Anything else about bantams. :D


And for those interested here are my girls Snowy (White Star), Belle (Bluebell) and Willow (Columbine).

Hi-----your girls look great___fit and well ! Bantams ? --cant beat Pekins! They have the 'cuddle ' factor , great characters , reasonable layers (when they get going) good broodies! Ros

Thank you. Funnily enough, I like the looks of Pekins but concerned about them being broody - will that mean putting them in crates and what not? :?
 
another vote for pekins lovely hens and really friendly and can get them in lots of different colours. Plenty of places sell them as hens so you dont have the problem of getting rid of the males, they so cute I would never be able to cull them. They do get broody quite easily but you can usually break them without too much trouble.

Thanks. I have been searching the net and have found 'none available' or 'hatching eggs available'. Will keep looking, would like some pretty colours too. They really seem adorable.
 
Evening chesnutmare, I've just recently brought a trio of Pekins for Mini Meadows in Northampton. They have a huge selection of chickens and an array of Pekin colours. I have a black, silver partridge and lavender. Very cute!! I get about 4-5 eggs a week, fairly small but taste great!!
 
where about do you live. Power Poultry in norfolk sell pekins. all cooped up in sussex sometimes have some too.

I'm in S Wales but will travel a little way... I went to Worcester to get my hybrids. I'm off to look up these places now. :)
 
power poultry do deliver by bird courier although not sure how much it would cost to you. If you interested it is worth getting in touch with them as they dont always have all the birds they have available on the web site. I got four really nice birds off them last year two silver partridge and two silver birchen they the cutest bundles ever.
 
I really love Pekins and have 7 hens and one cock in all different colours. Also just hatched 2 chicks today.
Why not try advertising on the wanted section here?
 
I've got Pekins too, but they are inclined to go broody - what about Belgiums or sablepoots.. I've got chicks and hatching eggs coming out of my ears :-)07 :-)07 or German Langshan, very pretty, delicate and good layers and I've never yet had one go broody - then ther are Banty Faverolles - big eggs for a banty, very pretty -- the list is endless :-)17
 
I know a couple of people here in Wales who have pekins, will try & find their details. Will pm you.
 
iv 3 pekins and a couple x pekinthey are sweet even my boy does not attack me which i find roosters like to do to me i think they think im a rooster the bramha bantam is a good pet bird too iv been told.
 
Ah, great. I think I am winning my OH around... it all comes with a price tag doesn't it, especially housing. :roll: But love chickens! :-)07
 
my step dad just built a big run out of old broke pallets all he paid for was wire, hes reused an old coop for now but will make one out of same pallets soon so its cost him about £40 in wire and its go 16 chickens in and could easy fit another 16
 
If you are looking for Pekins in Wales we have a wide range of pure bred pekins here in Swansea.
 
Chestnutmare, if it's pekins youre looking for, might I suggest you contact the Pekin bantam club, there are almost always birds of excellent type available for sale, advertised on the club website.
Plus the fact that these birds are often a fraction of the price asked compared to ' retail' stock suppliers. You also have a better chance of acquiring birds of true Pekin type and character, unlike the 'monstrosities' who's eggs one often sees on Ebay!!
I would suggest the same tack in seeking any kind of pure bred poultry.
