I haven't been around for a while and had a message asking if i was OK. Yes hale and hearty (apart from a rubbishy cold keeping me confined for a few days)
I posted this somewhere else and laziness has made me use cut and paste. Anyway I hope to get my journal updated soon and will let you know when it is. Hope all is well with all of you - all the best Sue

I am just outside Oxford at present getting over a dose of girl-flu, or should that be older person flu? anyway its pretty well nearly better now but I had a wonderful day in Oxford

Here are some piccies - I have managed to learn how to upload thing to YouTube while I was stuck in with a cold

Best viewed in full screen as they say

Phoebe is well and behaving herself beautifully. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but i am staying on a farm campsite and everything is very muddy, so I have been training her to jump straight into her nest and tuck all her feet in. She looks at me and listens to everything i say, she is such a sweetie, that is why I was wondering about a puppy with her so she could train it for me. Foolish idea I think, but still very tempting

I have decided to stay over in the UK for the time being as I find touring England in the summer with something the size of Thebus is more than a bit stressful, and there are still so many places I always meant to go to but never did such as Oxford, and Stowe Gardens both of which were even better than I imagined

I have been writing down my travels but didn't want to post them until I can put the pictures to go with them and still can't get to grips with the new mac book thingie, but I am still having a great time and loving the travel.

In the last few weeks I have been to London, and though I didn't see The Queen, I did see the Lord Mayors Show, the Poppies from the viewing platform at The Shard, ate at the Ritz, saw Warhorse, then explored the Hellfire Caves, saw where Magna Carta was signed, the Concrete Cows at Milton Keynes, Bletchley Park and Colossus, went to Evensong and sat in the Knights of the Garter stalls at St Georges Chapel, went down a coal min, sampled Bakewell Pies in Bakewell, revisted Chatsworth, spent a night at Keilder Observatory using their telescopes, photographed the Chillingham Wild Cattle, went to Lindesfarne on Holy Island, saw Yorkshire Sword Dancing, and fired a cannon at the Fenny Poppers, oh and lots more.

I will let you all know when I finally master updating the blog

Lots of love and good hatchings next season

Hi DBE. Been following your travels on the Accidental Smallholder forum, but the last I heard you were up in Scotland somewhere.

I am just outside Cirencester at present - have managed to get a few pages on the journal, but still no good with the photos :(

Hi DBE, been following you on PP & elsewhere. Glad all is good with you :)
looking forward to seeing the pics when you can upload them.

Ive just acquired a tablet & it seems very alien to me, Im such a technophobic :p Am using my old pc to view the forum as will take me forever to master the tablet even though my son has run through it with me more than once since it arrived 3 days ago.

This is my new wordpress blog for the New Year. Hopefully it will be easier to use once I get to grips with it.

{Broken link removed}

Hope everyone had a great new year. Remember the days are getting longer now, those eggs will soon be here and you will all be posting about how to use up surplus eggs

Hi DBE, great to hear from you again. How's Phoebe getting on? Does she feel the cold?
I went from buying eggs over Christmas, to giving them away a week later, and that's only from the 4 actually in lay. Do you get withdrawal symptoms at this time of year?

Yes she is settling to it a bit, though I know she would still prefer to be back at our old home.

She does like all the fuss and admiration she gets when we pull up so that makes up for things a little. We have had a few really cold nights earlier in the month, and though I cover her with a blanket she gets up in the night to turn round and loses it, so I found an old cardigan and put it on her, I didn't button the front and she must have got the sleeves / legs tangled and in the morning she couldn't get up as it was like a straight jacket and just lay there looking at me forlornly till I sorted her out.

For Christmas Sally and Niner gave her one of those super warm fibre blankets and that has gone down very well. Its big enough to cover the bottom of the bed, which has a fluffy cover anyway, and then the sides can wrap over her.

Before she had it one night it was very cold, and I got up to check her and she trailed after me to the bedroom looking hopeful, and I relented and let her in. When I woke in the morning she was full length beside me with her head on the pillow! Mind you she kept us both toasty warm under the duvet!

I worried that she would try to get in every night, but the weather suddenly changed to warmer the next day and she hasn't tried since, so it must have just been that she was very cold.

I can put the heating on, but the fans which run it are rather noisy, and also I would need to have the generator on at some point in the night, and as that is at the back under the bedroom it would make even more noise and I probably wouldn't get all that much sleep myself

She is having a great time today as we are on a lovely caravan park in the grounds of Cardiff Castle, with lots and lots of SQUIRRELS to watch.

She will chase them and rabbits given a chance, but we were on another site and when I told her no, she let a squirrel hop by within four or five feet of her, and at Sally and Niners the other day half a dozen of their rabbits had escaped, and when she was told to leave them she just ignored them for the rest of our stay. What a good girl she is!

Hi all,

I spoke to a breeder today about some Marans eggs and I mentioned Sue / Darkbrowneggs.
He told me she lost her battle with Cancer a few years ago now. I had no idea. She was a lovely character that I certainly have missed on the forum.

Tim.

I think those of us who followed her blog did know about her death, Tim, and she also posted on Practical Poultry Forum. She was a wonderful writer and her stories about selling her home and setting off on her travels in Thebus with her Great Dane Phoebe will be long remembered.
I tried to post the link to her travel journal (www.theworldismyoyster.org.uk) but it now says Server not found.

It was www.theworldismylobster.org.uk but it's Not Found. I suspect that what ever fee was paid for the domain name has log since run out.

I bought my two Crested Cream Legars from her - an amazing lady and sorely missed.

I too was saddened by her death. She made the long and arduous journey here.
My favourite story regarding her visit to Shetland is when she went to the embarkation point for the ferry to a small island called Foula. She asked a ferry crew staff member “ Would I be able to get my bus onto the ferry?” His reply of “ No but we would be able to put the ferry on your bus and then float over” has always tickled me.

We used to enjoy reading her posts and travelling tales. A brave lady, missed on the forum
