Hi all, im from the north west of england, I have just got my first Indian Runner duck and drake they are apricot trouts and are about 9mths old, I love them already.
Im letting my children choose there names so at the minute they are Shriek and Fiona.
Im a bit worried as ive heard its going to snow this weekend and wondering should I be doing anything to make sure they stay comfortable in the cold ..... how do your ducks and chickens deal with the snow ?

Ahh welcome to the wonderful world of runners!
Ducks deal with the snow well, just watch they don't get wet then freeze to the snow. What is a problem is the wind. This can be very debilitating so make sure they have an area sheltered from the wind. Don't assume they will shelter in their house as they probably won't. If they are exposed you could make a wind break out of straw bales. Keep an eye on them, feed them some supplementary corn or oats as this helps then generate heat and make sure they don't shiver.

Ps chickens don't deal well with the cold and snow, if its bad they may want to stay in their coop all day. I have lost chickens to garage cold conditions.

Welcome to the mad world of runners ducks! I have a flock here and they are really quite hardy, although they don' t really enjoy the snow. I agree with Dorsetduckowner, increase wheat rations, build a shelter for them, and I also made sure they have a lovely deep bed of straw in their house. :)

I've got 4 indian runners about 18months old, 2 white girls,one green/black male and a male apricot trout-all hatched from eggs in a incubator.
Mine are ok with whatever the weather throws at them-including snow. They have a duck house for night time to keep them cozy. I'm in the north east and it snowed overnight, now sleeting but they're quite happy mooching about.
They're great fun to watch and the girls have a healthy quack on them. Mine have just started to lay again after a break of several months which has meant that the black drake has started to ward me off which is literally a pain when he gave me a nasty peck the other night.

lol yes grass is dissaperaring fast with all the snow and rain, the area of the garden they are in is like a mud bath at the min, oh well ...... they loved the snow the other day , I couldnt get them in lol
 
Hey, your ducks are awesome!

I'm currently on the verge of incubating my first batch of runner ducks.

Where are you from in the north west? I'm from Preston.
 
Thank you im just on the outskirts of merseyside, between maghull and ormskirk, oo i would love to have ducklings good luck , I would love a pure white or black female, think thats next on my list .... fingers crossed for you hope you get lots of little ducklings.

Hi guys, I've not been on here for a while but my ducks have been ticking along nicely until last week.

I left some eggs in the duck house and they sort of went unnoticed for a week.

I went to collect them and they were warm! It looks as though I have 2 girls sat on them.

Now the eggs have been added to so there is now quite a lot (about 15)

Is it normal to have two girls sat on one big pile of eggs?

I'd like the girls to have a go at hatching their own so do I just leave them to it?

Should I prepare another special area for them for when they hatch (if them hatch)

HELP PLEASE!! :D :D :D
