Hi...

I'm not sure if any one can help me, but one of my Golden Pheonex Hens has gone walk abouts, she comes back in the morning for food then after that she goes and doesn't come back until the next morning, I tried sitting all day to find out where she goes but it's impossible because of work and everything else. Do you think she is sat on a nest of eggs soemwhere? The only problem is that I have searched everywhere and litterally cannot find anywhere in the garden (and its pretty big) that she could be. or is she just going off and sleeping elsewhere? :-)07

Thanks

possibly could be broody and sitting on eggs. Problem would be predetors. If she is staying out all night she is very vunerable to foxes, stotes etc. Would be best if you could find out where she is and bring her and her eggs in for saftey. Will the eggs she is sitting on be fertile?

The most likely thing is that she has a nest somewhere. In fact this is typical behaviour of hens that are 'free range' in that they will make a secluded nest, come off to feed once a day and creep off back to the eggs to continue sitting. You can watch them for a long time to see where they go but if you turn away or blink even, she'll be gone and you've no idea where.

Okay thanks guys, the eggs she is on would most probably be fertile as we have a rooster, I found a bunch of eggs under some sticks a week ago, then broke them all and little embryos were inside. This happened last year with another hen - but she was in bed each night and then one morning 8 little chicks were running around the garden, not sure how they stayed warm. I might try and follow her but I know if I turn my back for litterally a second she will be gone - Maybe I will just have to wait and see. Oh but if she is sat on unfertilised eggs will she be sat on the for a long time or will she give up? And is it possible it would be in a tree somewhere or can they not jump that high?

If you've got a male, the chances are the eggs will be fertile but if they're not she may sit for weeks or she may give up sooner. They do nest above the ground too but would only nest in a tree if the nesting site was suitable to hold a clutch of eggs.
They sound like a very interesting breed & not one I'm familiar with. Any photos (male & female)

Hi,
Thanks all.. woke up to 5 babies running around the garden - they are now contained in a pen with fine mesh over the top - google Golden Pheonex Hens and cockerals is what i can suggest (evrery time i try to upload a picture they say its too big and i cant do anything about that)

But thank you :)

Are these like yours??? http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Phoen/BRKPhoenix.html

Beautiful birds!

Thanks for the link ncotb.

Yes very nice birds but couldn't cope with the tails. Amazing that a breed so fancy should exhibit so much natural behaviour.

They are fantastic birds - These are identical to mine...

They are incredibly friendly and even the mummy hen lets me pick up her babies... I sold the last lot of chicks for £50 per pair - they went like wildfire! Not sure why people were paying that much to be honest. Gonna do the same with this lot! :)

Thanks everyone :D

Well this is the breed for me & I'll learn to cope with the long tails. They go off and lay clutches of eggs. Every so often you go out in the morning to find chicks running around which you collect up and sell for £50 a pair :-)08 And I won't be looking for any partners in the venture either

Haha chuck, Sold them all now, sold a pair of 2 for £50 and the remaining 3 for £65 :) They go in 5 weeks, Supid thing is - its the people who bought the last lot from me! Don't know why they can't breed their own but there we go! :D
