for a few weeks now when i let the girls out i noticed one of them trying to make the sound of a wood pigeon well thats what it sounded like to me but this morning it happened again and i turned round to see lanky doodle making the sound but this time it was sounding more like a cockeral and she was even trying to do the movements like stretching her head up as well is it poss for a hen to do this ?? and i do know shes a hen as shes laying almost everyday ethier that or my bantams are laying big girl eggs

Hello, yes, they can make "crowing" noises- especially if no cockerels about- they will still lay but become more masculine- i had a poland hen and when the cockerel was removed in the winter she would crow and try to court the other hens- as soon as the cockerel returned- back to normal. It's very common in hens that are kept without a male.
regards, Davidd :)

thankyou david :D she will just have to get on with it as i am not allowed a cockeral on the allotments be funny though when someone complains about it as no doubt someone will .
