Does anyone use hemcore for their ducks? I use it for the chickens but have been using straw for the ducks. Although it's chopped it's not that absorbent and I would prefer to use the same for all of them. I've read about using shavings but would rather use hemcore if poss.
Cheers

In the winter I use easibed on the base, with a thick layer of straw on top, changing the top straw or adding to it as long as the base is dry I just turn it. I think hemcore is similar to easibed. I also have the duck houses raised of the ground to help ventilation and stop rot, ducks are such mucky things and my runners excel in mud making! :D

I use Straw for the ducks and clean them weekly - If I don't get time for one reason or another, I will add a fresh layer on top. This works if there aren't too many ducks in a small area but would need a fresh topping of straw more regularly if you have a smaller house I guess...

I think that Hemcore makes excellent bedding for ducks; it is absorbent, smells fresh, composts down easily and needs less changing than shavings. It is also softer than some of the cheaper alternatives offered such as Eucalyptus. I have used Hemcore as duck bedding for years with no problems, although I do use straw on top in winter for extra warmth. This needs replacing regularly but the Hemcore lasts quite a while if you clean the lumps out and stir it up a bit every few days.

I,I put a layer of plastic sheeting on the bottom then a thick layer of thick newspaper followed by a thick layer of sawdust/shavings. This lasts about 3 days and fairly easy to clean out as I roll up the sheeting and tip into the recyling bin. Yes I have to fish out the newspaper but it works well for me, far better than straw as looked like it needed doing everyday.

I have looked at hemcore, but it seems a lot more expensive than shavings as it is packed looser. But it looks ideal.
