I have around 10 chickens that started to moult around 5 weeks ago and have yet not started to lay again. They are currently fed on corn since they started moult but am now going to put them back on a mix of corn and layers. Does anyone have any ideas how long moult normally lasts and will they possibly start to lay again this year or is it now getting a bit cold and not enough day light hours.

Thanks

hi there the moult can last for quite a while and during that time some birds may lay some may not as all thier energy goes into the moult and not so much into the laying but once the moult is over they should pick up again , but i would say lay of feeding them the corn and give them layers mash or pellets instead also apple cider vinegar and poultry spice tonic will give them a helping hand while moulting . to much corn will make them out weight on and a fat hen wont lay its better fed to them as just a little treat in the afternoon mine have about 3 handfulls thrown around the run mid afternoon so they have to hunt for it but i also throw a handfull into the house as its so much easier getting them to bed actually thats called cheating big time

thanks, i will put them completely on layers pellets only.

Hens dont tend to lay well in the winter months, but as the post above says keep off the mixed corn, just a treat
