Hi. Our light sussex seems to showing similar symptons to the entry egg bound? She laid a soft egg yesterday and seemed ok but is very subdued this morning: not eating or drinking, has her neck wound in, keeps standing in the garden and closing her eyes and at one point tucked her head under her wing and her breathing seems laboured. We have looked at her vent and it looks ok. She's now gone back up into the ark, so will check on her again shortly. Any ideas?

Hello, is she straining at all? like she was trying to lay? I would see what she is like in the morning- if no better then a vet is the best option - hope she is better soon
regards, David :)

She perked up more as each hour past. By the next evening she was back to normal & even laid an egg, having only missed one day after the soft shell. That turned out to be the only egg for eight days, laid two more, then nothing since the 11th.
I'm now concerned again. While she appears active enough, she spends a lot of time standing or sitting with her neck pulled in, with her head tight to the rest of her body (if that makes sense) we noticed that she'd lost a few feathers recently, but today it's apparent that these are concentrated areas, mainly on the top of her wings. We have two other hens, which are buff orpington crossed with welsummer. They all get on well, & have been together for 11 months. One of the hens has been a useless layer, & laid only a dozen eggs in her 1st 12 months. But has been better recently, but is broody again, spending most of the day in the ark waiting for an egg to sit on. I caught her pecking the light Sussex tonight, in the same area as the feather loss. This might be a coincidence. But I thought the more I tell you, the better chance you have of solving the problem.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks again.

If she is egg bound, she will usually visit the nest box frequently, or, will fluff up and have her back end down, possibly looking upright like a penguin. If she has laid a normal egg though, I wouldn't expect her to get eggbound twice though.

When chickens become ill, they will often fluff up their feathers and stay hunched up looking listless and sleepy. Unless there are any external signs of problems, it's very hard to know what is wrong without blood tests and so on.

Lots of problems are caused by worms - there is some information on Flubenvet for worming chickens here if they haven't been wormed recently.
