Hi, I have a Black East Indian drake who has a noticeably swollen abdomen and is a bit quieter than normal, not always together with the other 5 ducks etc. He has had a bit of a limp over the last few days as well, is it possible that the two are connected. I cannot find any swelling or injury to his legs.

Don't wait any longer Fionaw. Get him to a vet and get antibiotics. Could be a swollen hip injury that has grown to infection, but a swollen abdomen is not good.

Hi Fiona and welcome :) lameness in waterfowl can be due to so many things that a vet check is necessary, couple that with distension of the abdomen and I would say it is unite urgent. Lameness alone can be anything from infection to worms. With any luck it will be worms but I would be as quick as possible gettin him to a vet. Do you have a good duck vet? If not let us know your area and we can try and find one for you. With Christmas on Tuesday I would try and get him seen first thing Monday. Will you keep us posted?

HI, thanks for the advice, we have started worming him in case that's the problem, but will get him looked at by our vet on Monday, we are in mid Wales and have never taken a duck to our vets before - they are great with our dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and alpacas but not sure that they see many ducks! Hopefully they will be able to help him out

Take a fecal sample with you so they can rule out worms. Fingers crossed for the little fella!

Hello we took him to the vets and they prescribed antibiotics but he sadly died later that day. Our vets said it might have been amyloidosis, which I had never heard of?

So sorry to hear you lost him. I have never heard of a duck diagnosed with that, but I found a reference to it here in waterfowl: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=lFXrgRz2Zp0C&pg=PA222&lpg=PA222&dq=amyloidosis+waterfowl&source=bl&ots=gossPTY2do&sig=zZ50xD1irmKK1cUhY4CxOfBPL48&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Jb7gUIvHHsa50QXMxoGADg&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA.
If he had swollen liver and kidneys that can sometimes be a finding of amyloidosis. I suspect they would t know for sure unless they did a necropsy.
Very sorry for your loss.
