I use OpenOffice Writer for documents and the "Check spelling as you write" feature has gone haywire. It underlines every word with a red wavy line and tells me the word is not in the dictionary. I've tried turning the feature off then on again but that hasn't helped. :-)19 This happened about 12 months ago but I can't remember/find the piece of paper that tells me how to solve it. Anyone have any suggestions please? I find it difficult to spot my own spelling mistakes ... Any advice gratefully received.

I do Margaid, but on my desktop at home. If I remember rightly there is an option to refresh or update the spelling libraries on one of the drop
down menus and that usually fixes it (it might be in the preferences under spelling and grammar?) It sounds like you spellchecker libraries have gotten corrupted or deleted somehow.
... seems its a fault that develops in the user profile:

The third post that describes uninstalling (including user data) and reinstalling is probably the most straightforward (and un-techie) way of fixing the problem.

The explanation of why it goes wrong in the first place is probably right - the computer not shutting down properly for some reason (power failure or sudden low battery) and so not properly finishing its 'housekeeping.'

Reinstalling OpenOffice and the user data shouldn't affect you saved documents but it is always a good idea to make a backup (i.e. a full backup or a copy of your documents folder/desktop) just to be on the safe side.

That reminds me Rick. I'm not sure if I ever thanked you for your help with GIMP image editing. How horribly rude of me.

Thank you; it was much appreciated.

Thanks Rick, Problem solved! I used the "rename user folder" option. Someone else had directed me to that forum but a different page and I couldn't work out how to find "File Explorer", but there's an explanation in the thread. I panicked slightly when I started Open Office and there were no "Recent documents" listed but all is well. I've bookmarked the page so if it happens again ...

Oh, nice one! That was defiantly the most savvy way of doing it.
I can't get by without a spellchecker either but then it really annoys me when set to American English and keeps insisting on z for s. To be fair, before the internet and everyone posting to the world it probably didn't seem such a test unless applying for a job or writing to the litteratie (Ahhh! French! No hope!) :)

I'm fine when I'm handwriting, it's typing that goes haywire. It isn't that I can't spell, it's because I can't type. I can spot a mistake on someone else's screen but not on my own and it's so wasteful to keep printing stuff just to check your spelling/typing! But even a spellchecker doesn't pick up filed/field, form/from, for/fro which are my favourite tynpog mitsaeks!

But you can speak and write Welsh Margaid, so I think you are allowed the odd typing mistake with English. I have just about managed to say hello, and I know the Welsh for Osprey as OH recites it often enough.
