I am confused by my two chooks, they follow each other around like shadows, but to day the feathers on there necks and heads stood on end and they started jummping up at each other and using the feet on each other. So the problem is, are the male or female or is this just normal behaviour for either sex.

Well girls can get a bit fiesty, it is not unusual... photos would help if you are not sure..plus of course a cock-a-doodle-do in the morning! :D

Hi Foxy,
one is 12 wks the other 10 the 12 wk is a maran & the 10 is black rock crossed with an aracuna. At the moment they only make chirping noises to each other & nothing else. I have added some other photos to my last post, with them in.

They look like pullets at the moment. Sparring up and even fighting are normal for both sexes.

They look like pullets to me too. Our chicks always 'chest fight' regardless of sex -presumably it is to establish an early pecking order. Even when the cockerels begin to show they may not be the dominant bird -we've had some really feisty hens!

Hi All,
thank you for your wisdom, it is good to know that we might be alright. This morning the maran squared up to the duck with the bent beak but she gave as good as she got.

I had a really feisty hen once, sometimes she was calm and gentle, the n suddenly she turned really sharp. vWhen she had chicks she attacked anyone who went near her!

Aracanas Are a fighting breed and when I had them the hens used to have the fiercest battles, and my poor little cockerel had great difficulty separating them!

Thankfully the Maran is well able to hold her own against The Aracana, they seem to have settled into a routine now they hug each other like shadows, then for no aparent reason fluff the feathers and have a foot boxing match for a few seconds, then they go back to whatever they were doing before. My warren hasa bad left leg which seems to be slowing her down a bit. My wife sasid she has caught my osteoarthritis as i have it in the left leg as well. I have checked her over and there are no breaks cuts or anything else visible, maybe she has just pulled a muscle.
Any ideas.

Hi Henry. If there are no visible signs there is little you can do. We've had a few that have had the same type of thing and all were better in a few days. Except one Orpington who twisted her hip trying to jump off the perch and get through the pop-hole in one movement. Took her about 6 weeks to recover after I moved the perch over the pop-hole so such a manouvre was impossible. She still tries even now though.; she's 4 and you'd think she'd know better!
