Hello Everyone

Thought I'd take time to introduce myself and say thank for some inertesting reading in the older posts and threads.

I live in North Yorkshire and have had a dozen or so hybrids for a few years for eggs for the family and friends. Recently obtained 4 buff orpingtons and a fine looking cock bird. Have just set 24 light sussex eggs to hatch and the kids are already excited. I'm playing it cool, but just as thrilled to see the outcome, as this is a first for us.
Along with the wife and 3 girls we share our place with 3 ponies, a few pets rabbits, the obligatory cat, a lovely old numpty of a chocolate lab and my 4 terriers
We are a keen fieldsports family and this time of year spend most weekends with the terriers clearing rats from cover crops, pheasant pens and outdoor pig rearing farms.
If any of you expereince rat problems and live Humberside or North Yorkshire I would willingly come along free of charge to shift them with my friend and our 6 terriers - a much more effective and cheaper way than poison....oh and ferret out rabbits too if this is an issue

I look forward to contributing to the forum should my input be worthwhile

all the best

Playing it cool on the outside 0:-)
As giggly as the kids inside :-)07

Just hoping for some moderate success....to be honest I can't wait for the first candling to see how many are fertile.
At least with chicks you dont have to wait too long to find out if things are going the right way...unlike one of my terrier bitches...she is the master of phantom pregnancies

I shall keep you informed of the progress :-)17

Hi and welcome. Love your user name by the way.
Good luck with the chicks :)

cheers Claire Bear

i had a bad experience clearing the fridge out one day...and thats where the name came from

BTW we have a "claire bear " as a family friend
I think all Claires are bears

It might sound a bit sad but I have travelled as far as Worcester and Glasgow....just to kill rats
Whilst I would willing travel relatively local to me at short notice on a weekend problems further afield could be addressed by other like mind folk I know. Just shout and I will try and help. One persons problem is anothers joy
A large scale chicken farm in the midlands was sorted out last years by getting together a team of 20 terriers and as many helpers. By the ends of the day over 1000 rats were laid out and photographed.. My God these folk had a problem

I have tried to post some pics here but they are still too large after re-scaling
will have to get the kids to sort it out
all the best

Hi Tom,

If you have problems with the pictures, try reading this post:

http://poultrykeeperforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=77

It might help.

I had to set a limit because every picture has to be stored on the server and large images are huge on the screen and slow everything up.

Unfortunately there is no in-built re-sizing I can add to the forum at present. :(

Thanks Tim

Gross! Now thats what I call infestation!!
Where was that exactly??

either Lincoln or worcester...can't remember excatly
you would be surprised how many are around when they arn't controlled

last weekend we went off to a local free range pig farm...they sell all of thier pork to a well known supermarket chain. This year there werent as many but boy were they huge. Must have weighed 4lbs each.

Last year the numbers were so great that they came out of the holes and followed the feeding tractor around. Quite amazing really but when they are getting high protein pig nuts for no waste of energy searching it is understandable.

A few years ago we travelled to Linlithgow to help some friends from Bathgate in a paper re-cycling plant...now that was scary. Under mounds of paper, cardboard and plastic milk containers you could hear them but not see them....loads of the buggers. The terriers worked real hard but digging through shredded paper isnt like soil.

The minute you see signs of rat holes get some tracer powder down..if ther eis free food around they wont take poison bait but they will lick the powder from theri feet....then its goodnight vienna

If things get worse..then give me a shout and will try and help
all the best
