Hi I live in the US in Oklahoma. Found this site last evening and it looks like a nice place. I visit quite a few sites so I will pop in and out on occasion.

The wife and I have been raising and showing poultry since 1991 and it sure would have been nice to have information sites like this back then. We have a little acreage and besides the chickens we have 4 horses, till she gets a colt home then it will be 5, goats, dogs and 1 spoiled rotten cat. We raise Naked Necks, in both bantam and large fowl, RIR in both bantam and large fowl. Various Oriental games and Royal Palm turkeys. Well that is about all for now. See you on the board!

Hi there,

Thanks for saying hello nnbreeder, it's great to hear a bit about people and where they are from.

Sounds like you have a small farm with all of your animals! It must be fun.

See you on the forum.

Tim

hi nnbreeder,
Wow,you have a lovely collection of chooks and other animals. What size will your wife's colt be when he's full grown? What colour?Breeding etc?
How do naked necks cope in a mixed flock,or do you keep them seperate?I've only ever seen pics of naked necks, and, their necks look very red,so I wondered if other hens would peck their necks?
i'm sure you'll enjoy this forum, everyone is very nice and offer a lot of help when needed.

Thanks for the welcome.
The wifes horses are all what we call cow bred. They will herd and cut cattle plus are good all around horses. Two are 17yo and semi-retired, Sundance is a palamino (sp) and Red is a paint. Red was used at the Ok National Stockyards for years by a friend and he says putting hm on cattle is like riding a 1200 pound Blue Heeler, no matter what he WILL move the cattle and put them where he wants them. The two youngsters are a paint, Hotshot, and another palamino, Fool's Gold. There are all Quarter horses and about 14hh or just a tad taller. Sundance is the only gelding, the rest are stallions. The youngster will be about five months old when he comes home, another palamino. He came about in a trade for Red, we traded a mare for him plus got her first colt.

As far as breeding only Sundance has paperwork, the rest are grades, not registered. But that's ok, those horses can't read anyway!

Naked Necks are , from what I have gathered, descendants of the Madagascar Games and still retain some of that in their temperment. They won't go looking for trouble as far as starting fights but if one comes their way they do not back down. They also do very well in mixed flocks, the other birds kind of shy away from them throughout the day till roosting time. They lay big brown eggs and I have a few hens that are ten years old and still laying rather regular. Very people friendly too plus good broodies and moms. If I were to offer my girls a chick from another hen they readily accept it as their own, in fact I have had trouble in the past with my bantams stealing eggs and chicks from other moms.

Tim as far as being fun it is through the summer, winter here not so much.

Lydia here is Red, the night we brought him home. We was all lathered up and rolled in the dirt. Took him a bit to settle down.

Yes, Winter can be a bit tough here too with few daylight hours, mud and frozen water.

Thanks for the pic of Red,he looks good, balanced and alert.Over here his colour would be called a skewbald, as he has black in his mane,if he was marked black and white,he'd be a piebald.I also looked at the pic in your album of him moving, looked sound and nicely muscled.
I suspect your Quarter's are even more muscled,Quarter's don't seem to be that popular over here,or at least didn't seem to be when I worked as a groom many year's ago......shame,I always thought they looked gorgeous.
Palomino's are stunning to look at,with sun shinning on them they gleam better than gold. You're very lucky to have such lovely animals, although I'm glad I haven't got as many.Takes me all day to look after the few I've got :D .

Everything you've said about the naked necks rings true with information I've read about them. They are apparently a favourite breed with the french for their meat, and their personality as you've described them sounds an excellent bonus.I'm meeting a breeder of naked necks at a poultry show soon, think she'll be sick of me after 10 mins or so........ .

It seems that those of us that have the NNs love to talk about them. If you ever get a hen or two in your flock they will win you over.

The lady that I'm meeting at the show has recently hatched some eggs......I would love to get some but my garden is tiny, don't think I've got the room for more :( .
Because of their un-feathered necks, when it is very sunny do you need to put sun barrier cream on their necks? Or,as their necks are already a deep red colour is it un-necesary?
Someone else I know asked me,so I said I'd try and find out.
