Hello, I am fairly new to chicken keeping and would like some advice please. I picked up two new chickens at the weekend to replace two that turned out to be cockerels. They are black orpingtons and about 26 weeks old. I noticed on Tuesday as they were making their way to the henhouse that one of them was moving her neck in a strange way. Here is a link to the video my OH took yeaterday, it's a bit dark but you can see the movement. Any ideas? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRmaBt_rbzQ

Hi Devonshire. She is looking intently for somewhere safe to lay her first egg I would say. Nothing wrong with her neck movements I can see. Might be a bit dark in there to see properly and make her mind up or she is rather indecisive, which is perfectly normal when picking a spot for her first egg -it's a big moment for a young hen (and the keeper)!

Also, she's in a new place and still finding her way around I think, looking for somewhere safe to spend the night. Her leg and wing movements look normal I think, so i'd just keep an eye on her and not worry unless something else develops.

Hi Devonshire. I can see what you mean by the unusual head/neck movements. It does look a little unusual to me, not that that means there is a problem, it may just be normal for her. It looks a bit different to a hen just looking for somewhere to lay or sleep. Maybe she's just a little nervous about her new environment. As long as she's eating and drinking and not looking ill in any way, I would try not to worry.

Mine do this when eyeing up a tasty flower in a pot & trying to figure out how to get to it - I agree, exploring or making mischief :)

i agree as well :D mine still do it from time to time if a smell or something really grabs thier attention .
