I can't think of anything else (other than a cold / respiritory problem).
Yes, you will need to dust them with diatom regularly for a few weeks - and it will take a while to work but it does work in the end. You may find every day is too much - I would be thinking perhaps every 3rd day
Have a close look at their bottoms for any 'dirt' that in fact on close examination are moving mites.
