That's it. Week over. I'm on the train home. I can think about Xmas now! (bit late to go shopping but I can try.)
Apart from the obvious, looking forward to having some extended time with the crew (chicken crew) that isn't just half an hour in the morning for a change. Shortest day behind us - Hooray!

Ditto from me. Off to collect our turkey this morning- they have started to sell them at butchers now. The French usually have goose but it seems turkey is becoming a choice for people, not just the resident English. Christmas here is a one day affair only as there is no Boxing Day and no setting back of the holiday if it falls at the weekend.

Fortunately the shortest day isn't that short down here Rick. Being about 1000 miles closer to the Equator means day lengths are more even, so Winter Solstice gives us 1 hour 20 minutes more daytime.

Looks like I'll be in the garden Christmas Day as the weather is turning very wet next week.

Yes. I shall be donning my Hawaiian shorts and cranking up the barbie in anticipation of a scorching Christmas Day. (Oh, those recreational drugs!).
Fully clad in waterproofs to brave the rain soaked gales and give the dog a scamper and feed the livestock. Then down to a neighbours for the full dinner (which I love) and the tepid Prosecco (which I tolerate). And, of course, Doctor Who.

Seasons Greeting to you all.

.....and from me too, and a happy, happy 2018 to everyone on the forum and thanks sincerely to all who keep it running so smoothly.
I have been rottenly ill or a week or so, like a mini bout of real 'flu, thumping and painful head, aching joints and back and swimming eyes.

I am gleefully looking forward to more "Glorias" next year. My lone hatch, cannot fault her, no eggs though yet, every evening she perches on the roof of the chick shed and will not go in and roost until I go out to them, everyone else safely tucked up. The very thought of hatching more eggs has cheered me up!!!!!!!!!!

I only found out last week that Santa Claus was Dutch and a completely different person to Saint Nicholas or Father Christmas. In Holland and Belgium Sinterklass brings presents on 5th or 6th of December and St. Nick on the 25th. I also heard that he only wears red because Coca-Cola (or was it Pepsi?) chose that colour in their adverts!?

And seasonal greetings to you, valeriebutterly.
Forgot about the joy of hatching. Thinking about it does brighten up those long, cold days. Planning a bunch of Appenzeller x Dominiques for sale and then, hopefully, Jersey Giants and Houdans from eBay for projects I have in mind. Ewes hopefully pregnant by my new Welsh Mountain ram and looking forward to a good male lamb to run on.
Also I nagged a neighbour in to getting a Lonk ram so hoping he performs well or I'll look a complete idiot. Balanced against that another neighbour has sold his spare ram because the one he had from me 15 months ago did so well in profitable lambs that he's using him exclusively this year.
For me though it's a real stress fest!

PS
The last ram I kept of my own breeding turned out to be the most dangerous ram I have ever known. For those who struggle with the idea of a sheep being dangerous you need to encounter 14stone of fire breathing, testosterone charged ram. Eventually I had another neighbour down to shoot him where he stood. So hoping for a softie this time!

Happy Christmas everyone! I'm going to dau's on Christmas Day, and my contribution to the meal is the turkey. My mum is coming too, and she's cooking some ham. Dau is doing everything else.

Hello Hen-Gen I hope you have a softie this time.

It is not only unruly rams that rampage amongst us, my daughter's beloved adopted Devon Rex, put her previous family in hospital, and the sire of my last year's Croads, now grown, and as calm as most of them usually are, hospitalised the husband of the breeder when she was away or a few days.

Testosterone comes in all sorts o packages. I think I prefer to tackle a cockerel to either a ram or a wildcat though!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone on the forum.
We have had fancy dress day today, at Ensign bus, I have been a clown and we have had several elves and fairies and Mrs Christmas all driving buses.I have even made the Ensign bus twitter feed
Father Christmas traditionally wore green and white until he was hijacked by coca cola. OH has some Victorian and Edwardian cards and all have Father Christmas in green/white.
Hope you all have a good time

Merry crimbo to one and all.
Hope next year I don't lose so many chickens, they keep dropping dead.

Hope that wish comes true for you bigjim
Had two women on my bus this morning discussing an irritating rash which was cured by liberal application of Sudoku cream. So if anyone gets a rash over the festive season just reach for the Sudoku cream. Roll on 7pm

Have just got back from lovely couple of days with family. Had lunch, reached for my life-supporting MacBook, and found to my horror I'd left it behind, in my carefully-packed bag of online bits and pieces. Now face the season of jollity etc with only a v old, slow phone with minute text and a crap battery, until Post Office opens on Wednesday and maybe kind daughter can post it back to me before everything shuts down again for New Year. Just starting my detox and expect symptoms to get worse in the oncoming days. Still, am trying to think of the money saved by not browsing around for things to buy online.
Anyway, Happy Christmas to everyone - it's so good to still have so many original members, plus all the other friends who've migrated from Practical Poultry and the Dustbath, and helped to make this section so much livelier and more irreverent than it used to be. May you all have good hatches in 2018, with at least >90% pullets.

Irreverent, moi ? surely not. Hope you get your MacBook back soon. Glad you had a good time with family.

Oh Marigold, what a disaster for you! Has your old laptop given up the ghost as well?

Sudoku cream???? I'll have to remember that one BYM!

That aside, Season's Greetings to everyone on the forum and if you're on your own, or working over the next few days, remember that your friends here are thinking about you.

On your own? I dream of being on my own! I've just been tipped off (6.45pm) that the island roamers are heading my way for a drink. Can't quite bring myself to turn off all my lights and hide in my shed. Last night at the Hall I had a pint of Coke, a pint of OJ and two pints of water. It really hit me how when your sober those who are drunk are tedious to the extreme. The worst of it is the realisation that other times when I think I'm being erudite and witty I'm probably being boring. Christmas - don't yer just luv it!

I have a friend who has refused to cook Christmas dinner just for two as she doesn't see the point, so they're going to the pub. She said that never before have there been less than 4 people for Christmas dinner. My meal is all planned except that I haven't decided when I'm going to eat - and I can please myself! I just need to make the brandy butter.

It's like that when one is the designated driver Hen-Gen ...
