Well my little darlings are starting to eat out of my hand and if lucky I can get to stroke 2 of them and managed to pick up the Ranger with no fuss, the other 2 are still a bit weary when I make a slow attempt to pick them up.

It's only been a week and think its safe to say they are pretty well settled. My only regret is only getting 3 birds !!

Baz.

Well done, that's quite an achievement after only a week. I've just got two new hybrids, a Columbian Blacktail and a Brown Leghorn hybrid, who is very beautiful and quite aristocratic looking already, but of course more flighty than the other little girl. Marigold and Nutmeg don't seem very interested, certainly not aggressive, which is a hopeful sign. Nutmeg has tried pecking through the wire of their run, but only to check whether they were getting any treats they didn't finish up. (they don't understand about grapes yet and she did find one, to her great and secret delight - she definitely didn't tell Marigold.) Trouble is, I'm running out of brown or golden names, having used up Amber, Nutmeg and Marigold on previous hens. Am thinking of Saffron and Cinnamon at the moment, with Teasel on the reserve list. They looked really shell shocked yesterday when they arrived, as they had come from the breeder only that morning, a journey in a crate in a lorry, then they were turned out into a field with lots of other new hybrids of various breeds, then an hour or so later I came along, another rather panicky catching situation for them, then another hour in a car, then a new run - but today they look much less stressed and more confident, so I shall have to see how well I can do with them compared with you, BeemerBaz. I only get new birds about once every two or three years, so it's very interesting to go back to the beginning again.

Blossom (skyline) and Pickles (black copper maran hybrid) will now both jump onto my lap. I think they know I'll protect them from the mean ones! I was really surprised as I'd read that Skylines can be quite flighty.

Love the names, Marigold!

It's now Saffron and Russet, a shorter name for the neat little Blacktail. Had a bit of trouble getting them to eat at first, their crops never felt as if anything was in them, and the pellets just weren't going down in the feeder at all. But today I changed them on to a different brand of pellets I happened to have, and spread out a few on a dish, and to my relief they started tucking in. During the day they go out into a grass run, and in the evening I return them to their part of the main run, so they get picked up, carried around and handled twice a day. In the past I've found this is as good a way to get them tame as any really. Much easier to catch them both times today, and once I've got hold of them they settle down in my arms immediately. At the moment they don't seem to know what treats are, they just stand and look at a sprinkle of sunflower seeds or corn, and even mealworms are regarded with some suspicion. What very well brought up young ladies! No chance of hand feeding them until they have been corrupted a bit, I think.

Thought I would try the cabbage on a string yesterday, the chucks not interested in the slightest, bloody fussy birds !!

They were very happy with a handful of dandelion leaves yesterday so they might get more of them if they do no harm ?

Try your girls with bolted lettuce. My brother gave me some in answer to a request for any old discarded greens from his allotment.
I had a girl on each end of each lettuce given, and totally demolished in seconds, mine seem to prefer grass/ lettuce to anything else green.

Marigold - How about Lentil? They can be brown.
A colleague of mine called her baby "Lentil" until it was born, presumably because a some stage it was the size of one!

We called our first unborn Budleigh Salterton, to the point where I was mightily relieved it turned out to be Sara instead, though we did think B.S would have been an imposing title if he had gone into politics!
Will put Lentil on the list for next lot of brown birds. They've now settled down as Saffron and Ginger. It's nearly as hard naming chickens as children!

Dandelion leaves are very good for them, specially young plants as they are full of natural calcium and trace minerals ;)
