Hello all

:) I finally managed to add to my flock today. :)

I'm now the proud dad of five Buff Orpington hens and one Buff Orpington cockeral! After being used to my welsummers and two pekins, this lot looks enormous, the smallest hen is about the same size -ish as the bigger welsummers. The biggest hens are BIG, and cockeral is a monster. He's easily five times the size of little Rambant the hooligan pekin. He's been named Odin and the hens are becoming known collectively as 'The laydees'. They remind me of big buxom women with big frilly bloomers and rosy cheeks but with a hint of Little Britain added. A bit of an overactive imagination me thinks! :)

I took a big precaution in bulding a separate enclosure for the orps so there's no battles between them and my original gang. The welsummers came and had a look then wandered off, even Rambant didn't seem too bothered after his initial look.
What I wasn't prepared for was the orps fighting amongst themselves! This is the worst fighting I've seen from any chickens. They were ripping each others feathers out, squaring up to each other, jumping on each other, even ragging each other around by the back of the neck! Eventually Big Odin stepped in and calmed things down a bit but there's been so much squabbling in the hour I had them before bedtime. I hope this is just a reorganising of the pecking order while they settle into their new home. :?

They didn't know where bed was so they took a bit of guiding into their house. I had to upgrade the perches because those flimsy little sticks would never have lasting with those big bruisers all sitting on together. I was out until 9pm last night fiinishing the enclosure and had to hold a torch under my chin so I could see while screwing the roof on. Building a new hen house in gale force wind, in the dark has been one of my least enjoyable experiences so far this year

The weird thing now is that being after some orps for so long, now I've got them I don't feel the same way I did when I got my first lot. I'm sure they'll grow on me but so far they seem to have completely different temperament to my welsummers. I'd always understood orps to be very placid and docile birds. I hope this lot settles down soon. I'd hate to see feathers fly the way they did today

I'm planing on keeping them in their enclosure for around two weeks so they all get used to seing each other then do a supervised opening of the gate to see how they go. I'm a bit concerned about having two cockerals on the same turf. I'm planning on having their houses at opposite ends of the garden so they've plenty of land between themand hopefully they can patrol their own territory without meeting too often.

Odin is a big lad but Rambant is a hooligan who doesn't back down. I'd rather have one big happy flock but if needs be I could always have two separate runs. I know it's been covered on other threrads but I'm more than open to any tips and suggestions you all might have for me. Anything for a peacful life, preferably without bloodshed or flying feathers!

So pleased for you, that you finally got your Orps, now horrified they've been scrapping :o .Did the seller have them all together?
Just that you mention one hen being smaller, maybe she wasn't/hasn't been in/with the group long enough for them to establish their pecking order properly. Then the change of territory has unnerved them.
Could the strong winds have been upsetting them?
Today,a lot of my birds found the wind too strong, they didn't scrap amongst themselves but were definitely un-settled.the blackthorn is flowering,so we are going to have strong winds.
I do hope they settle down soon,so you have pleasure from them rather than hassle :( .
Odin should stop their arguements,as he settles in more, hopefully he will step in sooner.
As to your description,Odin's Laydees being large buxom women, with frilly bloomers and rosy cheeks is perfect :D .Best description of an Orp hen I've heard ;) .

Love your description of your Laydees! Good luck with them, I'm sure they'll all settle down & you'll get to know each ones personality & fall in love with each & everyone :)

I'm fairly sure they're just sorting out the new pecking order in their new home, but for a supposed docile breed these orps are vicious! I'm hoping that it'll be sorted by the weekend. I'm also starting to think that one of the hens is another cock in disguise. S/he is the biggest, second only to big Odin. She has a bigger comb and flappy bits under the beak than the others apart from Odin. I'm still learning to tell them apart but in amongst the squabbling I've seen what looks remarkably one hen mounting another. It could just be a dominance thing otherwise I've got another cockeral or maybe even lesbian chickens :?: :? :?:

I got three eggs so far. The largest was bigger than the welsummers eggs and the smallest was the same size as a pekin egg.

One of the hens escaped from the orps run via a gap I thought my pekin would struggle to get through. I tried to shoo her back in, in the nicest possible way before she got pecked by the welsummers but they got her anyway. She eventually got back through the tiny hole only for me to discover one of the welsummers had broken into the orps run! I managed to get her back out without any violence. Odin didn't seem at all interested in her, the Laydees ran out of the way. Once I got everyone back in the correct run I patched up as much as I could with whatever I had to hand.

They knew where bed was tonight - well mostly. I saw what I think was two hens and Odin squashed into one nesting box. He's so big, he's pushed back the roof of the nesting box and was sleeping with his tail feathers pointing up in the air through the gap he made

I think I've got my hands full with this lot!
And I think I need to build a new house for them!

Funny you should say that. I always had an idea to make some hen house in the style of Viking period houses. Shingled roofs rather than straw. They'd eat that!
Odin would have to have the chicken version of Valhalla though. I might even make a rainbow bridge and do the whole Asgard theme 8-)

Maybe I'm getting carried away again... :?

They're great!

Although I suspect I may have another cockeral in there, haven't heard any extra crowing yet though.

I've never seen a cockeral as big as Odin before but his feet are BIG. It might just be the way big chicken feet are but they seem a bit lumpy. I'm wondering if he has scaly leg mite. He's shown no sign of distress or itching so not too sure.
I've got WD40 but no vaseline. I'll try to get some asap.

What does WD40 do to mites?

I got another three eggs today, one of the clumsy laydees laid it on the hen house floor and stood on it, so got a cracked egg. I'm still having it for breakfast though! :)

They are settling in well as you haven't had them long.Doubt you've got a lesbian hen  ,must be a cockerel or a hen with a hormone imbalance :? .
Definitely make them all Viking style residences, but, not a Rainbow Bridge,Rainbow Bridge is where animal souls go,to await their human family/friend.Do a search and find it,I'd post the poem on here, but,I cry so much I can't see what I'm typing so make mistakes :o .

It's official!

I watched two cockerals crowing at the same time this morning. Botheration!

Three cockerals in one garden is a bit much. I could never part with Rambant, and Odin is the talk of the village so it looks like the stealth cockeral may have to go. I'm considering selling the extra cockeral with one of the hens now.
This means I could fund my upcoming pekin purchase and still have some orps, just not quite as many as I started with.

That is a shame, that one of your 'Laydee's' is a Laddie, well,Odin's Laydee :( .Maybe when they are all free ranging in your garden it wont be too much of a problem. Two Orp cockerels may work, although for only 3 hens it probably would be better to have either more Laydee's,or find a new hme for the young Laddie/cockerel.
