Hi Guys,

This morning i found a tiny yellow chick, we have both wild ducks and geese we bought, which are friendly and can be easily handled. Anyway, I picked it up and bough it inside after offering it to the female goos which is sat on a nest of eggs (I thought it would be one of hers, but she turned it away - so I picked it up again, I have checked under her and she still has all her eggs) it is now sat on me and wont leave me alone.

There is a picture attatched would you please tell me if you think it is a gosling or what it is... and how do i look after it, we have a cage with a heat lamp, chick crumb, corn and water in the cage will that be alright for it?

Visit below for the pic

cheers

hi,

it needs is a heat lamp and safe box or cage to live in with shavings on the floor or kitchen roll away from any predators and if its on its own i would give it an old teddy or something it can snuggle into for security. next it needs food and water, food being chick crumbs. i would avoid anything else as its so young. that will keep him/her fine and it will need checking a few times a day but seeing how cute it is im sure that wont be a problem!

if its not come from any of your domestic birds then i would give the rspca a call and they will come and collect it and take it to a wildlife rescue and rehabilitate it back into the wild where it belongs. if you think it is a chick from one of your domestic birds then you can do the rearing and add it into your flock.

good luck

Hey,
It's got a heat lamp and safe guard thing, its good sawdust and a bit of straw, a duck teddy food and water. I'm not sure if it has come from our female goose - I googeld goslings and it looks identical so i guess it is. I'm going to hand rear it myself.

Thank you though! :D

Hi David,

I think you are right :/ not sure why i have a random yellow duckling - can wild ducks hatch these kind?

Thanks

i live by the canal and you do get yellow ducklings i think it may be the yellows are boys and the browns are girls but im not sure. also just a thought, is it too early for it to be a wild baby? ive not seen any babies on the canal here yet?
sounds like your doing a fab job of being mum for now though!

Ooooh, we live on a big river and have so many new normal brown and white wild ducklings, but this one is bright yellow... and is huge! It looks so much like a duckling but so much like a gosling as it has a very long neck... I'm very confused! Haha - And thanks, it has now gained 7 grams since sunday and loves going swimming in the sink for short periods throughout the day, other than that it sleeps and eats chick crumb. :)

i suppose time will tell what it is untill then he or she will probably keep you guessing!

It looks like an Aylesbury duck to me. It will end up white.

Ahh it may be! I guess they will :/ Its growing at an astonishing rate though - its doubled in size since Sunday! :-)17

I agree with David, it's a duckling.

As for chick crumbs - check on the ingredients for Anticocci drugs - basically anything that says ACS or Anti- Coccidiosis because this will probably cause problems. They overdose on it because they eat more than chicks and end up losing their legs / can't walk.

Good Luck though, I think you have found a friend for life ;)

OH god! I did not realise that! I will go check the packet now :/ What do i feed it instead? And what about the long neck? Will it just be an obscure looking duck? I'm not even sure where it cam from and why there are not more like it :( It runs round the house after me when I walk.. I put it on the ground outside yesterday and all it did was stay close to me or stand on my feet - how do I stop this? or has it just imprinted and there is nothing I can do?

Thank you very much though! :)

The chick crumbs says 'This feed does not contain coccidiosis' <-- That is the exact wording on the top... so is it okay to feed it?
