Have found books on Silkies and Faverolles for my children to give me as Christmas presents - does anyone know of a good book about Brahamas? Doesn't need to go too much into the genetics etc but as each breed has it's own little idiosynchrasies ( big word! :o ) I like to learn as much as possible about them.

I haven't seen any books on Brahmas I'm afraid. Most of the breed specific books I have found have been quite old so there could well be one out there somewhere. I had a good look through the old books at the national but didn't see any on Brahmas. I bought several very old books at the National and I took a few in to work to read during my lunch hour - one was called "Practical Inbreeding" and I realised I was getting some very strange looks with that on my desk!

Ha ! I bet you did! I would have been tempted to let them think what they wanted to  At the National there was a lady called Veronica Mayhew who had a stall selling books - ironically she only lives about 10 miles from me - She gave us one of her catalogues -'Catalogue of Modern Books' which has loads of books in it. There is one called Brahma and Cochin Poultry by Dr. J Batty. But I only want the Brahma bit!

I had a look on this site: http://www.bookfinder4u.com

and found an old book by Lewis Wright called The Brahma Fowl. There were places selling it in the US and then I spotted it through an Amazon Marketplace seller here: The Brahma Fowl Book Delivery was 2-3 weeks though and I have no idea of the content of the book. It's quite old - if you don't know, Lewis Wright was a Victorian Author and he paved the way for many of todays poultry standards with his work.

I also had a look through one of my books called Lewis Wright and his poultry by Dr. Joseph Batty - this is more up to date (2001) and has about 4 and a half A4 sized pages specifically on The Brahma. It's a good book that covers many breeds and their development. It's also in Stock with Amazon.

It gives information on the origins / history and the Characteristics of Brahmas, light brahmas, breeding light brahmas, dark brahmas and breeding dark brahmas.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Thankyou Tim - really kind of you to find that out for me. Will look into both of them - the last one sounds interesting and may give me as much as I need to know. I have a couple of general chicken books but they only have a couple of pages in each of them on Brahmas.
