Has anyone any ideas about how to keep Gloria amused, short of being in my pocket with portable water and food, I have no idea what to do for her welfare?.
She is now eight days old and bright and pushy the 4 - 5 week old Pekins would have her for dinner I think, and have no idea how to quickly get another chick for company, just loves attention and me. My granddaughter Amy called her Gloria - who will survive!! The 4 week old Pekins are in a very large animal cage which is their usual move before going outside. Maybe I could partition a bit of it off, I do have 2 electric hens, and she does not at the moment need much room, just company and need to know that others of her kind do exist.
She was bought from a company who breed barred Plymouth rocks - new getting very hard to find, the company looked good, so I bought a dozen eggs.
Only 5 were fertile, the others very dodgy in their development, and the only survivor was Gloria.

Can you not put the pekins outside now so she can have the whole cage? My pekins went outside at 4 weeks, they were fine. And it is getting warmer now. If there are no chicks for sale locally (I'm sure there must be somewhere) would she accept a plastic duck and/or a mirror?

I put a mirror in and a little stuffed toy in for the week mine was on it's own and put a little radio on low beside the cage.

Thanks for your replies RH and D. I think I will put her in the divided cage so that she can get to know other hens and that she is not the only one.

Will let you know how she develops.

I used a small wire hamster cage for an injured quail, placed within the main run. The little bird could move around, feed and drink, and see the rest of the flock but could recover in peace as well. The cage cost me £2.50 from the junk shop at the recycling centre!

That is what I did also

Thanks everyone for your replies, problem hopefully solved. I bought a small animal cage from ebay which will fit in the other cage easily for £8.95, no quarrel with that! It will give Gloria space, her own lodgings and the company of the other growers.
