Hi and welcome,

The following link is really useful :- http://poultrykeeperforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=844

Most of what you will need to know and purchase has at sometime or other been discussed on here. This forum is where I have gained most of my chicken keeping knowledge from.....

Worming - FLUBENVET (Link at bottom of page) a most reliable and effective wormer
Tonic/health boost- lots to choose from, really down to personal choice and what you want to pay. I have added so much to my girls food and water this past winter, as they had a rough time moulting.

"Apple Cider Vinegar" (also with added Garlic) added to the water at the rate of 20ml per 1 litre - keeps tummies healthy and clear nasal passages- chickens prone to repiratory problems.
"Respite" or a vitamin solution i.e. Nettex, again added to water- helps in time of stress, i.e. moulting, new birds, illness
"Poultry Spice"- added to food also gives a good boost especially in the cold months

ALSO - Lice/Mite Powder/spray. Lots written about Frontline, Ivermetcin, Johnsons Mite Spray, Barrier Louse Powder- I have it all.

DIATOM - Natural way to arrest and prevent red mite.

The list is exhaustive, and you will be adding products as each issue arises. Don't try and buy or absorb it all at once. I have wasted a lot of money on various things, which although very good in their own right, have proved unsuitable for my girls, or they just didn't like it- i.e. food, yes they can be very fussy. Also bedding, after trialing every type going, when this current bale is finished we will revert back to "dust-free Wood Shavings".
Again this boils down to personal preference, and trial and error. What I wouldn't do though is rush out and buy all the latest stuff. A warm draught free house, somewhere to lay. i.e. nest box, maybe a perch, comfortable dust free bedding- depending on age, fresh water and food. I really wish I hadn't splashed out on fancy containers. Mine are just as happy to eat and drink out of a plastic/china bowl.

Get yourself a good book or 2- can recommend "Henkeeping" by Jane Eastoe- this was a godsend for my first few weeks.

I hope this helps, and I am sure you will have lots more advice, and tips, as we are all a friendly and helpful bunch on here, plus we all love our chickens!
Have you got your chickens yet?
OR What do you have?

Thanks for that...will have a good look.

We have 1 sussex hen 2 sussex bantams and 2 red hens......we have had them for about a month and have the basics...and they are semi laying!! But just wanted to know what else we can do to keep them nice and healthy.

thanks for your help

Oh and month in...... sound like a nice little mix, not sure what red hens are. Is that the colour?

If you havn't already given them a tonic, I would. I had 2 more new girls Friday, and they are guzzling a tonic I have added to their water. Its Nettex Poultry Solutions. Have you checked them for mites and lice yet?

Have a look at Flyte So Fancy- All their products have a helpful write up guide explaining what is used for what etc....
