Hi All-

I finally bought home my new hybrid girlies today. Very happy with them, they're very beautiful- one escapee so far, only got as far as under the hedge but I'll be more careful next time!

The only problem is one of the girls has a slightly wonky beak- a fairly significant under bite. I didnt really notice at the time (too excited choosing!) but the lower half of her beak really is pronounced and fairly wonky. It doesnt seem to stop her eating or drinking, she's 20 week and a big girl and I've seen her wolf down plenty of food today- but I was wondering if I need to address it? Does she need it trimmed or something? I still think she's lovely so it doesnt affect me keeping her!

Any advice is, once again, incredibly welcome!

Hi, congrats on your new girlies! Regarding the one with a crooked beak, I wouldn't worry at all if she is eating and drinking okay. I did the same and chose one that was missing a part of the bottom of her beak and since has lost the tip of the top and now has quite a short beak but like yours eats and drinks well and has no trouble from the others. Unless there's any trouble just enjoy having your new chooks I'm sure ou will have plenty of fun & games with them not to mention the eggs :-)

I'd agree with frenchchickens. As long as she can eat and drink without trouble don't worry too much - If she is able to wander about in your garden she'll soon wear down a beak that is a little wonky- mine sometimes scrape theirs on concrete to get their beaks trim! - overgorwn beaks are sometimes found in battery hens as they can't wear them down naturally.

Enjoy your new hens - Hoping you wake up to lovely fresh eggs in the morning!
