I don't know whether anyone can answer this query, but one of my original hens is supposed to be a French Blue Maran. The only problem is that she doesn't lay dark brown eggs, but a normal light brown egg colour. I am starting to wonder whether she is actually a Maran as I thought they all lay dark brown eggs! She is a beautiful dark blue with feathered feet. I will try to post a photo and also a photo of her eggs when I get time. I have tried to find a photo on the net of a French Blue Maran, but can't find any, I can only find copper blue. She was purchased from a reputable breeder (I think!) Does anyone else have a French Blue to compare?

I shall be interested to find out more about the French type Marans, so am waiting to hear from those on the forum who currently keep them

This is a link to the standards as published by the Marans Club of France, together with some photos of French Marans in various colours,

Sometimes when Marans first come into lay the eggs can have a calcium coat which makes them appear paler. How long has she been laying, and how many eggs a week is she producing?

Thank you for your reply 'darkbrowneggs'. I have looked at the Marans club site you mention and her eggs are even lighter than the number 2 egg in their colour chart. There aren't any photos of the French Blue unfortunately. In answer to your question, she has been laying for over 12 months. I had her in March Last year and she was about 19 weeks and already laying. She lays very well, until her moult she laid nearly every day and has just started laying again after a very heavy moult. Some days she lays a very large egg, usually a double yolk bless her! I am going to attempt to upload a photo of her tonight, but didn't have much luck last time I tried.

Well, it's what inside the egg that counts - though I hate having to break my little Cream Legbar's beautiful blue eggs, they look good enough to eat shell and all.

Yes, Marigold, I have a Cream Legbar and for some strange reason I hate breaking them as well! Doesn't worry me breaking the others though! The only reason I'm asking about the French Blue Maran is because I'm wondering whether she isn't in fact a French Blue Maran at all!! She is very beautiful and a very gentle bird, so I wouldn't mind. Just want to know that's all.

Can't load the photo!! Spent all evening trying to email the photo to myself to make it smaller and finally managed to do this! Now it's telling me that the extension type isn't accepted and it's a .jpg so I have no idea what the problem is. I'm struggling with my new mac computer and if it hadn't cost so much I would gladly throw it through the window at the moment!!!!!!!!!! Need a gin and tonic now!!

let me know if you need any help Sue!

Wonderful photo DBE! You have reminded me to take a photo of faverolles eggs for you.. :D

I definitely do need help Foxy! I'm not sure how to explain what the problem is though as I've got this new Mac computer and I have got the photo on the computer in the emails and also in the iPhoto. It is saved from the email in a small size somewhere, but I can't find it! Last time I tried to upload it into the post it told me it had the wrong file extension, but it was definitely a .jpg and I thought this was the right one. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I'd stick with throwing it out the window. I want to do this with computers almost everyday - particularly when they won't do what I am pressing the right buttons to get them to do.... :?

Sorry can't help on the eggs - but would one day love to add a couple of marans to my bunch so I can have some of those lovely dark brown ones. Hmm.

If this works, then there may be a photo of my French Blue Maran! It's probably not a very good one with the wire in the way, but hopefully someone can confirm her identity!!

To be honest Foxy I have no idea how I managed to do it and don't think I could do it again, so not much hope for me entering the competition! At least my new computer managed to live another day!

Doesn't anyone on here know what a French Blue Maran is supposed to look like? I am very disappointed!!!!!

Here you go, found one! :D

They are rather lovely I must say...

Thank you Foxy. My Bluebell IS a real French Blue Maran then after all. Why isn't she laying dark brown eggs then? Never mind, they're very tasty anyway.

Silly me I had forgotten about it when this thread started but I borrowed (with permission) this photo from someone who keeps a selection of hens to show the different coloured eggs you might expect and there is one shown from a
Blue Marans

I'm not sure whetherthe exposure in this interesting picture has been properly rendered in trannsmission, at least the Legbar egg doesn't give much impression of the beautiful blue that mine lays. But it should put Sue's mind at rest about her Blue Marans laying comparatively pale eggs.

Looks to me like the Copper Blue Marans have feathered legs and have a certain amount of lacing. Blue hybrids usually have clean legs and no lacing.

Chuck, mine isn't a blue hybrid, she's supposed to be a pure bred French Blue Maran. The colour of egg in that photo is exactly the colour she lays. Is there a difference between a Blue Maran and a French Blue Maran?
