Any ideas anyone?
Nancy has laid her first egg of the year :) , but it seems to have freckles... Last year the shell was smooth and consistent across the whole egg for the whole laying season, but this one seems to have raised white blotches on it.
Thanks.

Looks like excess Calcium deposits. Lots of our Wyandottes lay eggs like that BB, some more than others. Noticed more this year so perhaps it's an age thing.

If she has been out of lay for the winter it's likely her system isn't quite back to normal yet - maybe she has some kind o residue to clear, as Chris suggests.
No problem, so long as the shell is strong and good.

In some breeds, eg Cream Legbars, the colour goes right through the egg and can't be rubbed off even when the egg is very freshly laid. Other breeds lay down a coating of colour on the outside, which needs t dry before it becomes more stable. So I expect your purple spots are just the colour process misfiring a bit, like BB's hen.

Interestingly, today I scratched off some of the white splotches. Like the idea of purple though, sounds like fun :D

Interesting turn of events today. After 3 hours clucking away to herself, Nancy produces what I presume is a wind egg!
