fox has just killed them all

Hi guys

i am devastated, i have been keeping silkies for 5 years and i was just woken up by the neighbours informing me a fox killed all my chickens. i loved them to bits and spent fortunes keeping them happy and safe the but forgot for one night to close the coup. really sad and upset, why do they kill them all if they dont eat them? I dont understand!such a shame, they will bury the bodies for me because i cant manage to see their dead bodies again. keep your chickens safe.
 
So sorry to hear about your Silkies. A fox will kill all or as many as it can as it will bury the rest for when there's not so much food about. As you've found it only takes 1 mistake (I left ours ours out free-ranging while I did the school run - I thought as we had builders here they'd be safe, but we lost 3 & a 4th died a few days later from shock/?internal injuries). It's a horrible thing to happen but please don't let it put you off having hens again - you made 1 mistake & I'm betting it's 1 you'll not make again.
 
So sorry Bloo - make sure you are extra secure before replacing your lovely silkies--as the fox will be visiting again. Ros :cry:
 
Thank you guys for the support, this all happened at 3am this morning (I'm in Scotland) so I'm still "getting over it" but won't give up on keeping hens and roosters at all.... luckily I had brought one hen indoors with her 3 days old chick so that I could keep them warm and separate from the other hens (they were broody and the eggs about to hatch, they were eaten too). So I have one hen left now and a tiny fellow. Plus a few eggs I had collected the last 3 weeks that I will put in the incubator now. They were all pets, each with their own name and story so I'll miss them, especially one of the hens that I raised on my hand, she was very placid and friendly... but more will come... I don't blame the foxes, they need food too, I just wish they hadn't killed those they were not going to eat........ it was a real shock for me. Seeing them all dead like that. I have an electric fence which I didn't use because the run they had is really good, obviously the electric fence is now coming back out and will frighten the local cats and other wildlife too.
 
So sorry Bloo, :cry: What thoughtful neighbours you have!

It might help to check the fence is on max when you pop it on, then bait the fence just on the inside for the fox with something tasty, this ensures the fox gets a good shock and learns the fence is "bad"
 
Thanks everyone for your warmth and your support, you have no idea how much it helped! It's really good to share stuff like that with other people out there that care about their hens and roosters just as much. The electric fence is up now, I'll leave it on for a few weeks before I put the little hen and her chick there and I have 6 eggs in the incubator now, some of them are older than 2 weeks so I am hoping at least a couple will hatch, it's be a matter of luck I guess... Thanks again!
