Hi everyone looking for any help/advice that anyone could give me.

I went out to the girls this morning to give them their morning ration of corn and have noticed that one of the girls has got a floppy comb? :( She seems to be absolutely fine in herself and running around and still eating and drinking as per.

Has anyone got any suggestions on what this could be? Oh not sure if this makes a difference but we are still getting eggs from all four girls at the moment.

Any advice would be great, thanks

Kim

hi Kim, what breed is she? hens lose heat through their combs- and in the very hot weather we are having they will be very hot- as long as it's red and healthy looking then i wouldn't worry- battery hens have big floppy combs as they are kept in very warm sheds.
regards, David :)

Hi Kim, one of my hens had the same a few days ago but it's back up this morning so I don't suppose it was anything to worry about.

Thanks David for getting back to me so quickly. Not been on here for a wee while. It has been so warm recently so I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is all it is:0/ keeping my eye on her closely for any other signs and she is eating and doing the same as the rest of the girls. Oh her breed is I think rhode rock?:0/ does that sound right?! Thanks for your help.

Hi Dawn, I'm keeping my fingers crossed the same happens! This is my first time keeping chickens and I'm so paranoid about these kind of things. You always assume the worst. Will keep you all updated on how Poppy is doing. Kim

Hi everyone, not been on for ages just been busy with the school holidays. :D Well Poppy still has her floppy comb :? She is still perky and seems pretty happy in herself, her wattles and comb are lovely and red the same as the rest of the girls so i am quite puzzled by the floppy comb. Only thing i thought but might not matter. I used to have the girls out in the garden free ranging for part of the day but i have had to get the o/h to build an enclosure (which is a really good size) as the girls were trashing the garden. Would this cause this to happen them being enclosed now instead, but then the rest of the girls are fine? :? Heeeeelp!

Hi, no, it will not cause floppy combs :) If, as you say she is acting normally then don't worry- some chickens do have very floppy combs- it is quite normal :)
regards, David :)

thanks David, i have been keeping a really close eye on her. She has always been the smallest since i got all the girls, but she has been ruling the roost since day one and is still really bossy with the other girls. Thanks again Kim
