I guess I'm a misery but just heard fireworks going off,10pm of an evening and ages yet till bonfire night.
I am very annoyed,I don't have a problem with kids popping round trick or treating. There are lovely kids around here, but I do think it is irresponsible to set fireworks off at 10pm.Just going out to cover up rabbits and chooks to try and soundproof for them  .

-----------they started round here last w/end , I HATE them-- fine at allotted times etc but we have a local house used for all sorts of events-get them going off sat. evenings all summer-drives one of our dogs potty! Ros :x

I hate them too - I have lots of animals/birds and it is a misery for them! Each time I hear a bang I jump inside, thinking of them all. One of my goats looks as if she is going to die each time. People without livestock don't care - they are selfish. We have a small farm on the outskirts of a village and have a small reacreation ground between us and a row of houses - last year someone had a 21st birthday party with loads of fireworks which they let off in the rec. ground and it was so loud the windows were shaking so you can imagine the state of my lot!

I thought there was going to be some sort of 'firework law' to stop 'unnecessary distress to animals' - what happened to that?

When I first moved here 15yrs ago it was fine.We had one organised firework display on one night.it started much earlier so also finished earlier.I could cope with that although all my pets suffered.
Last night took me completely by surprise, and, made me jump.It frightened some of my dogs, terrified others, really scared my 5 rabbits, they wanted to run and couldn't.It also woke the hens up and I was worried about them.
I 've got carpet off-cuts to put over their houses,it's supposed to deaden the sound a bit.It didn't seem to help last night though.I'm dreading this week now.
It is very selfish and unfair to inflict noisy fireworks on people, let alone pets and livestock.I do have sympathy for both of you,we are all suffering.

I'm prety sure there has to be a license or permission for any firework displays now

I think there is for organised displays but I wonder if there is legislation for peolple who buy them to let them off in their gardens - or in the street etc!!!

I looked it up last night on the HSE site and you need permission/ licence for category 4 fireworks but cat 1 2 3 can just be let off by anyone
I have no idea what these categorys mean tho

Category $ prob the massive ones they use in organised displays - the other categorys probably account for the rest! Just as noisy and a bl**dy nuisance!

they nerli kiilled our horses. the stupid neighbours decided to set hundreds of on sat nite.

OMG,where your horses outside?
It is extremely inconsiderate for anyone to let off fireworks with out telling horse owners.I dread to think how far a horse or pony would bolt with the fear caused by fireworks.

This week and week-end must be murder for you.Are the horses ok now? Or has the high winds and the shock of the fireworks made them very skittish and nervous?

urgh not looking forwards to this evening they are having a display at the village school which is less than quater of a mile away

We haven't had any tonight, dare say tomorrow and saturday will be hell.Hope it's finished now for you.

I was really lucky
All the young ragamuffins in the village have grown up and discovered beer, cars and asbos so there were very few fireworks set off and they didn't even have a fire!

Cool!

It rained heavily last evening so I would think people would have saved their fireworks till tonight and tomorrow. There is a big organised one tomorrow but about a mile as crow flies so at least the bangs don't rock the buildings and the ground unlike the local ones!! My horses are outside - it is a job to know what to do as when in their stables seem to be more panicky than if left out. Why oh why can't people realise what a misery it is for animals and their owners - I don't know about you but I am exhausted by the time the night is over - I jump and tense up each time a loud bang goes off! Our sheepdog used to be absolutely beside himself but when they start I don't look at him and get him to catch his ball constantly - it seems to have definitely done the trick - he used to get into such a state that he consatntly panted drooled and even made him sick. I give him little treats as well - at first he was so distracted even to eat but now he looks for them.
Will be thinking about you all and your pets/animals/lovestock.

It is hard to know what is best for horses. The stables I worked at kept them all stabled, even the tougher native breeds. We did have to shut the top doors as well as bottom ones, and,we used to leave radio's on as they were used to those being on during the day whilst we worked.
They opted to do this after having yobs setting off fireworks close to some horses fields and the horses bolted, crashed through their fence, one was killed by an arctic and two were killed with the humane killer bolt thing.
I think if a field is safe, with shelter, hopefully away from where the fireworks are being let off is probably best, the horses would hopefull bolt to shelter, and not run through fences etc.
At the time of the accident, some real nasties were setting fireworks off deliberately around and close to livestock.

I don't understand, why after years of mis-use they are still available to the general public.Would be safer for people and animals if there were only licensed events.Fireworks can be very pretty, but, they shouldn't sound louder than a cannon.

Absolutely. Makes me angry when you see 'buy one box - get one free' Why can't the RSPCA do something about it?

Here in NZ they have clamped down on the days that shops can sell fireworks - I think it's only 4 days before Guy Fawkes and skyrockets were banned about ten years ago because they used to set fire to scrub and hillsides. There are a lot of public displays now as well in the cities and towns. On Nov 5th here, I noticed there weren't many people letting them off like there used to be - perhaps the recession has helped and they can't afford them this year! :!:

I think it needs pressure from the public to local m.p.'s
I don't have a lot of faith in the R.S.P.C.A.,I guess they do some good, shame about the other stuff they do.
