hI,

Mike has agreed to me having two pullets in the Spring...... :-)17

I am extremely partial to d'uccles and mottled pekins, and am open to any suggestions. I would like to know whether any of you would have two suitable girls, ready for March. We are in Uttoxeter, but are more than willing to travel for the right girls.

How exciting- at least its taken my mind of the rubbish health news.

very sorry to hear you are unwell Elmwood.
good vibes heading your way 8-)

and good luck sourcing new birds

Thankyou Blue,

After reading your hatching wish list, and seeing that you are in Derbyshire, was wondering whether you might have some nice girls??

So sorry to hear you're not well - although it must be a relief for you to have a diagnosis and be able to manage your condition and hopefully get it under control.

It is well documented that pets (including chickens!) are very good for helping people feel good - my mother in law took some of mine into the care home where she works and all of the residents were delighted- one lady told her that the chickens were "much nicer than you lot"- pointing at the staff :D She wanted to keep one on her bed!

Hope you find some lovely new pullets to add to your girls (you could have some from me but I'm along way away from everyone!) and also that you are feeling better very soon- stay positive - am sure things will look lots better for you soon.

Sending get well wishes
Nicky

Aww sorry you are feeling blue, blue...I do miss the longer days when I can just potter around with a cuppa and enjoy them. You are always welcome to a couple of faverolles bantams! :D

Thankyou everyone,

FOXY- have just looked at your wonderful site. Noticed the bit about faverolles in a mixed flock and getting picked on. Still worth considering, maybe Piglets offspring?

Just had a look at a few other sites, and forgot about me really liking lemon cuckoo pekins..... I am going to be spoilt for choice.....

Hi Elmwood, yes faverolles are very gentle and docile, I am always mixing and matching from my different runs, and rarely have a problem they all just...well get on! I would always be careful with more assertive breeds, eg. hybrids, where the faverolles may have a problem thriving. I have a fair few breeds, sussex, cochins and orpingtons these are all OK, however large or bantam soft feather breeds tend to get on together.
One of my boys (Danny de Vito) gets positively moony when his girls go broody, to the point he will sit with them too! :D

sorry to hear your unwell but at least now you know what your dealing with hehehe can i suggest something why dont you just have 1 of each bird you like :D :D even if you havent the room you know that it can always be found somewhere

I don't have mottled pekins or d'uccles... but I when I start hatching, (or rather, the incubator does ;) :D )
you are welcome to see if you'd like any.
sounds like you're going to be spoilt for choice, if all these offers carry on!!

I have a blue mottled pekin boy- once fertility is tested (and they are laying again!) I can put him in with my millie girls and they will give 50% black mottled and 50% blue mottled offspring-
More than happy to send eggs to blue in the spring to hatch for you if you are willing to wait a while for your girl elmwood? :D

Hi,

YES- I am already spoilt for choice ....
KB- Hadn't really thought about having two separate girls. I think after seeing pairs in the "for sale" pens at the fed show, I just thought how nice that would be.... already friends etc..

PJ- What a great idea, (if Blue could do this of course). What if we ended up with boys though? (we sadly cannot have due to our residential environment?)

If I could guarantee girls, I would happily get one of our Pekins to sit on one of your kind ladies eggs. I am sure I will have at least one broody this spring. BUT I want to be responsible, and to be honest I don't think I would find it easy parting with the boys.......

How exciting, so many options, and Mike has already said we can go to the Bakewell show on 5th Feb, and see what may be there....

Thankyou so much everyone, I am feeling very positive, and much calmer about everything.

yes, thats fine with me if I can keep one too?!
:D
(with my luck ... they'll all be cockerels  )

Elmwood, just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear of your problems. I know how you feel as I have had quite a few health problems over the past couple of years. Its not always as bad as it seems though and its surprising how people can adjust to most things. Keep doing what you love best, being with and caring for your chooks.
Best wishes, Claire.

Hi,

Clairethebear- :-)08 thanks.

Blue- As for the possibility of you incubating some mottled, huge thankyou..... that could be a real possibility- you can keep all the boys...... (naturally I would recompense you for your cost and time etc.)

Link to show at Bakewell on 5th Feb:-

thanks Sharron ....
the link is v helpful, I couldnt find anything from Bakewell Agri themselves (might have been looking in the wrong place  )
Maybe see you there?!

Sadly any more cockerels that dont find new homes will get eaten... just so you're not disillusioned!
But lovely mottley ones should rehome ok...

hope you're feeling abit better... ;)

Sharron, so sorry to hear about the rubbish news. Hope you're coming to terms with it a bit now, and thinking of new chickens is a brilliant distraction.

I'm (still !) trying to decide on two new ones for this year. I had a lovely natured cockeral that I had to give away when he started fighting with his brother, his new wives have chicks I could have so I'm very tempted but they're pekins and I would like something that isn't broody so often.

Have you thought about bantam orpingtons ? I saw some and they are lovely and apparantly very docile. They may be a bit big to mix with your little girls though, not sure how they compare in size.

Dawn

Hi Dawn,

Long time no speak... How can you possibly resist chicks....... as for broodiness, don't think I'll be raising an eyebrow this year, it all seemed such an issue last year, but now I know what to expect, and as you say pekins are very broody. :|
Hmmmmm- Orps are so beautiful, and look so cuddly, but it does worry me how the LF manage to stay upright on those little legs and all that bulk. As for banties certainly wouldn't rule them out, along with Wyandottes too.

Am hoping to find some birds at the Bakewell show on 05.02. Havn't stopped chatting about the "new" girls, so its definately happening just a matter of when? AND yes, its a huge distraction.

Anyway doc has signed me off- never had a sick note before, and I going to concentrate on birds, garden, and getting lots of shut eye...... :-)17

I'd like some of those eggs too, i know i'm trying to cut down but blue mottled sounds good and maybe my crele project will be completed by then so i will have room

Really sorry to hear about your health :( Do understand what you are going through as my OH was diagnosed with a lifechanging problem about a year ago. the chickens are such therapy for him! Have you thought about brahma bantams? They are very endearing & hilarious to watch when they are running about. They are very docile birds. Im sure I posted a picture of my girls somewhere. Wishing you all the very best :-)17
