Is it OK to feed chickens fat balls as a treat in this cold weather? I've made some from the fat left over from making roast potatoes, and added some corn, and my girls seem to absolutely love it.

Bet they love it PG. I cant see that in small amounts/treat it will do them any harm. Ros

I tried it once and the girls just put their noses up at it!! Mine go mad for live mealworms, you get mobbed :D

My treat in cold weather is warm ready brek made with water. Chooks go nuts for it when they first come out in the morning. Used to get through bowls of it when I had lots.

I made mine a breakfast of bacon fat, bits of chopped up rind mixed with porridge and ready brek today.
I'll add sweetcorn if I have any. I warm it up, mix in some pellets and wheat, serve it and stand back.

I normally just use fat balls for the little birds. robins, sparrows etc. It's surprising how many birds I've attracted to my garden since I started putting out feeders and fat balls for them. The robins are really brave, they hop around only a few feet from me. Cool!

Yesterday, because we had deep snow and the chooks hate it,they all came in my lounge.I left the door open so they could wander in,which they did along with 2 sparrows and our robin.

Mine don't seem that keen on porridge - they're incredibly fussy. At the moment all they want to do is stay in bed. I've been off this week so have been able to clean them out when the it's light (luxury!), and I pick them up in turn and put them in the downstairs section of their house just to make sure that they're eating and drinking but after about 5 mins, they're straight up their ramp to bed. Can't blame them, I'd stay in bed too if I could.

Maybe I'll give the porridge another go, would be good to give them that 'ready-brek' glow.

I started with a little bit of porridge with their normal food and increased it a bit then started warming it up as it got colder. Now they love it.

My mate always said that his hens love rice but mine don't touch it. Haven't tried weetabix yet

Mine also love rice, but are not so keen on pasta.
In the supermarkets that uncle Bens microwave rice has been on offer,I've been buying mine a golden vegetable variety,it has sweetcorn and peas in it,with small amounts of red pepper, all my girls love that.

Your chooks sure are spoilt Lydia - we get that microwave rice here in NZ too, but mine don't get any of it  they have to make do with layer's pellets and odd bits of cooked fat from the rind of lamb chops. But if I make meringues and have a pile of spare yolks over, I fry them up and they gobble them up in no time. I also save the crusts off bread - that's their treat when I call them to go back inside their run, otherwise the little devils would stay out in the garden all day. :D

LOL,Hi Jani,I'm giving them more rice at the moment so they've got enough carbohydrates to cope with the cold. They only had rice occasionally when the weather was milder.Mine are also eating more of their layers pellets, and still tucking into greens etc.I do give them bread occasionaly,in this weather I pop it into some warm water, they love that too :D .

Lydia ! the thought of you leaving your door open in this freezing weather for those chucks makes me shiver - :o

I only leave it open first thing, whilst I'm popping in and out with food/water etc.My central heating isn't on until I shut the door, the hens and I then warm up :D .

Oh Lydia - I have visions of you closing the door and you and the chooks sat on the settee drinking tea and eating biscuits. They really are lucky chuckies :D
