Please can you help me? My warren started laying eggs almost a couple of weeks ago and so far she has laid 5. When hens begin to lay, can it be a bit erratic?...We have had 4 days with no eggs! I am sure she is fine and is showing all the signs of being healthy....dust baths, running round the garden, looking healthy and alert etc. I assumed when they begin to lay warrens would lay an egg almost every day but Elsie seems to be a bit 'all over the place!" :?

Yes, this is quite common. Just like in humans, 'hen puberty' can take a while to settle down into a regular pattern. If she is living a stress-free life, is free from parasites and is healthy, she'll get the idea before very long. The time of year doesn't help, with the shorter days beginning to mean less daylight, but she should make it into steady lay once fully 'switched-on.'

Thank you for your advice! I will buy half a dozen free range eggs from the supermarket until my girls get themselves a wee bit more organised then!
