Having recently lost an Indian Runner due to egg peritonitis, I've now lost a Hookbill to enteritis. Has anyone else had any experience of this? The vet said it was not due to something I had done or not done, but just 'one of those things' & she didn't respond to an antibiotic & anti-inflammatory injection. The other Hookbill seems to be OK, but she is the only duck now, and is free ranging with the chickens by day, but going into her own house alone at night (by choice). Would it be best to look to get another asap or is she OK as she is, with the chickens by day but alone at night. Any views?

buy a freind for the duck ? i always like to think they enjoy being with there own kind ,

i've recently notice that dispite saxony and rouen ducks being ducks simulair in size ,they would stay in one bunch . although they all get along very well , 50% of the time they stay within there breed ,

I would get her a friend or two of the same breed as well.I'm sure they like company at night as well as during the day.

Sorry to hear you lost your duck. Yes, definately would get at least one other for company but I would make sure your other Hookbill doesn't show any signs of this before bringing in new stock. The only real treatment is to cull sick birds and vaccinate healthy birds to stop the spread as far as I was aware.

Viral Enteritis is also called Duck Plague. I wonder how it was caught in the first place - it's normally only from wild waterfowl visiting. Seems like rotten luck for you.
