Hi,

Have 4 hens in an ark and a heath robinson extension that has so far (18months) been fox proof ... in our part of greater london ...foxes are daily visitors ...

Want to move to an electric fence to give them more space (after 2 weeks the grass is pretty decimated) ... but question is ... do I need to go for a super high fence ? ... Agrisellex sell a 4ft one ...is that high enough ...think i read a fox wont jump a flimsy fence ...but will spring up a 6ft high garden fence ...

Any thoughts ? .....

Cheers

actually they do an uber high net ...
"The 170cm (5.6Ft) Ultimate Poultry Net is the Tallest on the Market ..." ...but seems to be aimed at stopping a red deer ... the only red deer in my garden is the dear fox !

hi,

the benefit to electric fencing is the fox cant jump up, land and then jump back down as there is no top to land on. i have it round mine who live in a field. it does work even when not electrified. 4 foot will be high enough but it will need to be tight so it doesnt bag down inbetween posts. due to the fact grass grows it is also impossible to stop the battery shorting out, doesnt matter how much you try these fences are not great for electrifiying and will always use up batterys quicker than strands of fencing.

what you have sounds good. it should be fox proof but unless you have them in a secure pen you can never be 100% safe. having the freedom is part of the decision though. a 6 foot fence is easy for a fox to jump as it is solid not like netting so i wouldnt compare the two.

Handy tip_____ get some DPM from builders same length as fence. If you run it along directly under fence, hold in place by piercing with the fence posts----it stops grass /weeds growing under fence and shorting it out.If using batteries you need a spare to use whilst first is charging .Ros

good advice ... will use the DPM ... will be running off the mains so hopefully should be ok ....only concern is chalky soil can dry out ...so will have to keep soil wet....basically a nice green electric fence will look better than my shabby mass of wires/fencing ...!

Something I had confirmed and became properly aware of when I moved down from the Bristol area was the remarkable difference between the behaviour (etc) of the Urban Fox relative to the countryside one.

Did you know that the Urban one has worked out how to kill Hedgehogs ? A rather worrying development :-)09

iirc there's a higher population density of fox's in some cities now (?)

certainly .. foxes are much more prevalent during the day in our corner of south london ...think the city fox isnt as nocturnal as we'd hoped !

Nothing suprises me after that fox was found living in the top of that "Largest building in europe" near Tower bridge recently...... and then re-released at Tower bridge :-)07  :-)19

EDIT:-

Ahha ! found it .....

Fox found living at top of Europe's tallest skyscraper

Staff discovered the intrepid visitor on the 72nd floor of the Shard building at London Bridge, 944ft above the ground.

The animal, nicknamed Romeo by staff, entered the building through a central stairwell before climbing to the top. It was living off scraps left by builders.

Pest controllers from Southwark Council eventually caught the fox after two weeks and took it to an animal sanctuary. It has since been released near London Bridge.

The fox was first spotted by a crane driver at the beginning of the month. Les Leonard, a pest controller, said: "At first I didn't believe it was up there, I thought it must be a hoax. I've got a fear of heights and getting the hoist lift from the 35th floor to the 72nd was terrifying.

"On the second day it ran straight past us then scrambled up a 10 foot ladder onto the rafters. It was surreal, we couldn't believe that a fox could go that high."
