One of my hens laid her first egg yesterday. She’s in the egg box today abs seems to have been there a few hours. I didn’t see her lay yesterday’s one. Is it normal for hens to sit so long, I’ve looked inside she is well. Thank you :-)

Hi fbo, all normal. Yes they quite often like to settle down where it’s cosy and private, it’s about the only time they get to themselves really! And when just starting to lay, they’re not used to what’s going on, it’s like puberty for them, isn’t it?
First eggs will be very small, around 40 grams maybe, and will increase in size as she matures. It’s interesting to weigh them each day and see the increase.

Ah that’s great. Thank you. Poor little thing must be a real shock when that egg comes out! :-)

Yes - no sex education in childhood, unfortunately.Did she lay eventually? Sometimes they just sit there and nothing arrives....

She didn’t end up laying that day. But she laid today. Strangely she’s taken to the egg box again. Maybe for an afternoon nap after all the excitement. The other 3 girls haven’t laid yet. I wonder what they will be like.
