Eggs with no shell?

When doing a routine check on the birds today, I noticed that one of my Croad Langshan's nest boxes was quite mucky. On closer inspection, it looked like one of the girls had laid an egg with no shell! Is this possible? Or would she have had a bad case of diarohea? I have looked at both hens and neither has any tell tale signs. Assuming an egg has been laid with no shell, what should I do?

HI I have had something similar recently but the egg was intact as I expect no one else had gone in there and trodden on it. It was a normal egg with a yoke but only had the inner membrane and no sign of a shell at all. It only happened on one day and had normal eggs since. We had one similar from some other chickens about a year or so ago but normal eggs afterwards.

I'm not sure how it happens but it looks like it just missed the last stage - maybe came out too quickly

Maybe someone else will know why.I look and any reply to this with interest.

Hopefully tomorrow you will have a normal egg instead.

Hello, it happens sometimes- nothing to worry about unless they are doing it every day. As long as they have access to grit they will be fine. It can happen with young pullets when just coming into lay for the first time but can also happen to older hens occasionally.

I've had quite a few of these as mine were getting the hang of laying, the worse thing, thinking its a normal egg, is putting your hand in to pick it up & touching this cold wobbly thing! :lol: It always makes me jump!(& I always think what a waste of an egg )
