Hi , newbie again with another daft question but how long before my girls eggs become a decent size ? The Bluebelle has been laying one egg a day for 2 weeks all small and perfectly formed. I am totally happy if they will alway be small but just wondering if they will get bigger as she lays more ?? Thanks x

They are always smaller when young pullets begin to lay and will increase in size as she matures. How big they will actually be in a few weeks or months depends partly on the breed, but a hybrid should give you a decent-sized egg of at least 60+ grams, and some are much bigger, 70+ or more.
The eggs will be at maximum size in her second year of laying, which is why it's best to breed from more mature hens. Bigger eggs = more nutrition for the developing chicks.

Hi Starpaws,

Ours have been laying for about seven weeks now (24 weeks old), some of them did start out small, but within a week or so they were "normal" size (store bought Large) for our breeds. My Araucanas are still laying a somewhat smaller egg. My neighbor has Araucans also and his are a more "normal" size. I really doesn't matter to me, I'm still amazed and thrilled everytime I go out and find eggs, plus they taste fantastic!

We do have a couple of girls that are laying an egg that makes me what to cringe :o  I really don't know how they pass something that big.
