I'm just wondering what is the easiest way to worm my 3 chickens?
Powder to mix in with their food?
flubenvet medicated pellets? and feed them on this alone for 7 days?

Sorry all the questions, still v new to this :)

Marriages premix with Flubenvet comes in 10Kg bags with a shelf life of three months. Your three chickens will consume about 3 Kg (150g per day each) in that time so you will have a lot of waste. Mixing Flubenvet into feed is an awkward process because of the need to mix effectively and the health risk to you, but someone on the forum recently mentioned mixing the required dose of Flubenvet powder with oil and then adding to grain (bit of tricky maths required there). The easiest way is Vermex in pellets sprinkled into feed (ours love that) or drops added to water, but Vermex doesn't tackle gapeworm among others? So I don't think there is an easy way to reliably worm unless you can find someone who will split a bag of Marriages with you.

Iirc it's 6 grams (1 scoop) of Flubenvet to 2kg of feed. When using it on our hens I mix the 2kg of pellets with 2-3 tablespoons of veg/sunflower oil (just add the oil a little at a time & make sure it's well mixed to coat all the pellets). After that I sprinkle over the Flub & give everything another really good mix to ensure the Flub's distributed evenly through the pellets.

I have heard that if you only have a few hens you can give them their Flub via treats - apparently half a grape with the cut side dusted in Flub (half a Flubbed grape daily for a week) or a dried mealworm dipped in sunflower/veg oil then dipped in Flub (again 1 a day for a week) seem to be the most favoured methods. Haven't tried that way myself & I'd imagine the dose the hen gets would depend on the size of the grape/mealworm....

Do you have any chicken-keeping friends/aquaintances nearby who'd be happy to split a bag of the Marriages Flubbed feed with you?

I find the easiest way to get a reasonably accurate dose into each hen is as follows;
Measure out 7 eggcupfuls of mixed corn, or corn + hulled sunflower seeds, per hen. Put about 1/4 of the total into a large container and add cod liver oil, or sunflower oil, to coat the pellets. Add the correct amount of Flubenvet powder for all the hens, stir very well. Gradually add the rest of the corn, stirring as you go.
Feed one eggcupful per hen, every day for one week, as scatter corn at 'treats time'. Separate any very greedy or dominant birds, or any who get bullied away from treats, and feed them separately. You will see that every bird is getting her dose and it will all be gone in avery few minutes. You will have mixed exactly the right amount to last the week, and won't have to worry about whether they're getting the right dosage. No waste from surplus food, and the hens will love it!

Stuff like Vermex etc may well be a valuable tonic to keep the hens' gut in good order but is NOT a complete or satisfactory wormer. (Have a look at the thread on the Chickens Health section of this forum about the relative effectiveness of other wormers and Flubenvet.

Thanks for your replies.

I think the easiest and cheapest way to worm my 3, is to buy a 10 kg bag of flubenvet marriages pellets. It is quite a bit cheaper than buying the flubenvet to mix myself.

If my 3 chickens consume about 3kg, the surplus can be given to my friend who's son keeps chooks too.

So if they just eat the medicated pellets for 7 days with nothing else on offer, will each bird be sufficiently dosed by the amount they consume each in 7 days?

Thankyou :D

you could buy the flubenvet powder and put a pinch on a piece of pasta for each hen for 7 days. the powder sticks to the pasta and the hens love it. at least you know they are all getting a dose. This way worked for me. Good luck.

They should be ok with just the medicated pellets, but for the week they're on the pellets they shouldn't have access to any other food (whether it be grass, scraps, corn, whatever). If they're eating other stuff there's a chance they could fill up too much on them & so not eat enough pellets to get their proper Flub dose.

Great that you know someone you can split a bag of Flubbed pellets with - easy for you both & saves waste & a bit of money.
