Duck off her legs and generally under the weather

Hi everyone - I'm new on here and wish I'd found this website a long time ago! Sorry for being needy right at the start, but it's a bit of Googling about my poor duck which brought me here.

I've got a female Indian Runner off her legs. She's not egg bound and has been wormed but she's OK on water (she has a warm bath twice a day at the moment). She's recently had an infection on her foot (bumble foot?) which was treated by the vet with Baytril. He also gave her Metacam.

She's losing weight, although is still eating a little and drinking normally. She's being gently "force" fed twice a day with soaked chick crumbs with a few added vitamins. This has to be done when she's in her bath as it's a messy business! She loves her bath and flies up and down on the water talking away to herself!

She's pooing normally (mostly in the bath!). She's not preening very well so her feathers are becoming quite waterlogged when she's had her bath. She's also got slightly runny eyes and her tail seems cocked to one side. Also, I've noticed her 'gaping' on and off during the time she's been poorly. Just opening and closing her beak. She doesn't seem breathless or anything. It's more her right side she's having problems with when trying to stand and walk and her tail is cocked to that side too. When she does stand up, she tips backwards.

We frequently find her on her back, legs in the air if we leave her for a short time to see if she's any better and can walk, although she's quite happy in her small hutch where she can stand up if she's leaning against one of the walls. We aren't sure how old she is as she was rescue. She's been like this over a week now.

This latter disorder came on after she'd finished her course of antibiotics. The swelling on her foot it still there slightly. The vet did say to hold off on the Metcam as soon as she started to improve and that was almost immediately, so she only had 3 days worth of that, or apparently it can affect their kidneys.

Thank you!
Wendy

Hi WendyC and welcome to the forum. I'm no duck expert but I do know worms will take them off their feet. Did you worm with Flubenvet or some other less effective product?

Hi Wendy,

so sorry to hear about your duck. There are literally SO many things that can put a duck off it's legs, some very serious and some not so.

It sounds like you have a great vet, I would suggest you take her back and have her x-rayed and a full blood and fecal work up to see what is going on as it sounds like she is really poorly.

Good luck and keep us posted.

By the way, where are you based?
